color of beaver sac oil
« on: February 19, 2007, 06:09:22 PM »
Does location have an effect on the color of sac oil? I've trapped beaver that has sac oil from yellow, to the last batch that was almost a dark brown.

Does it also effect the size of castors.  I trapped some that were real close to the same weight, same time of year, but yet the castors, were huge in some and small in others.

OIl does vary in color,I have no idea why.Castor size depends on how much they are using them.Big full castors, means they aren't spreading it around--smaller and flatter--spreading it all around town.
Spade hope thats what you meant on castor size.

Spade, the castors vary in odor from loaction to location,I imagine sac oil coloration may also vary for the same reason--probably what they are eating.
Biggest ,plumpest, fullest castors, come from those beaver that spend the entire winter ice bound. They can be truly awesome in size--matter of fact,I wish I had a few hundred of them now.

Thank you Tom, couldn't find the answer on the oil sack color.  I was surprised by the size of the castors from this last group, each side was about the size of baseballs, and your right they were ice bound.  The other 2 came from open water and were less than half the size, I just couldn't make the connection.
