lubricating ml for storage in off season
« on: February 05, 2007, 09:52:35 AM »
what are you using for lubricating the bore and receiver during the off season? I have the Sidekick, blue barrel.
Even though I cleaned it well last year, a small amount of rust collected right below the firing pin and on the latch piece below that.  Cleaned it really good this year and coated the entire surface of the receiver and parts, bore and outer side of barrel with bore butter.

Is there a better product? thanks.

Eezox and CLP work good for the outside, but Bore Butter is the only thing that goes down the bore of mine.

thanks for the speedy reply Quick! Can that be purchased in a store or is it ordered only from the company?

I used fine steel wool on the rust spots and got it off almost entirely but now I need to eezox it.

Eezox can be ordered online, it's hard to find locally here now that the LGS I bought from closed. CLP is good stuff too, it's readily available in automotive parts sections and hardware stores if you can't find the Eezox.

Years back TC had a spray can of number 13 water displacing gun oil.  Finding a can is getting harder.  It lubricates, penetrates and protects the ML just great. Once in awhile I find a can and I pick it up. Once this can runs out I'll have to find something else.

I just started using Ballistol on all my muzzleloading rifles. I have not had a lot of time to evaluate but so far things look good. I decided on it as it is a product that can also be used as a patch lube and does not gum up with blackpowder fouling like some petroleum products. Not sure I like the smell but I can live with it. Bore Butter has a following but I am not one of them. I don't think it is the best anti-rust product.

thanks guys. I just picked up some breakfree clp and that will go on the outside surfaces and bore butter down the barrel.  :D

Rem Oil has always worked for me. Don't care for that heavy oil film.

Rem Oil is ok, rated about the same as WD40, CLP or Eezox would be a much better choice tho, as readily available as CLP is, there's not really a good reason not to use it.
