Surplus Ammo> ?
« on: February 22, 2007, 09:20:33 PM »
Howdy, I've been lurking here for a few days looking at the Handi Q&A's. I was read'n on Paco Kelly's Lever site about this fine GB board over yonder. Been thinking about a single shot for a while now. I have seen H&R and NEF around for years but never gave then a second thought. This partly due to the price and just thinking they were a POS. Been wanting a Ruger #1 or #3 for some time..Well I can tell you after a few nights of reading up on the Handi's here, I now have a very different opinion.  I'm impressed with the feed back from everyone with honest questions, answers,  and opinions. I'm fed up with some sites with nut'n but black rifle, sniper talk, and inmature atitudes.
Keep up the good work and see y'alls around the came fire soon.
WHY.. Is Surplus ammo a no-no in the Handi please?? Is there a pressure, fowling, barrel wear, or other issues that prevent this? Or is it a legal stand point that H&R or NEF is taking tell you to not use it?  Thanks -g

Is the warning on their website?  I've not seen it.......I'm just starting to look into these rifles myself.

Surplus ammo should be used in surplus rifles.
Most doesn't shoot well in them anyway.
The 7.62x39 won't allwas go off in a handy. In fact that gun has been discontinued. Hardened primers for SKS are to blame.
NEF does not want you to use becoause of warrenty and liability.
Military specs don't allways comply with sporting specs.

Here's the notice that comes with the .223, right click it and save it, you can read the saved copy better. Seems to me the owner's manual also mentions only using ammo that is SAAMI approved which milsurp isn't.

What they said ;D

Plus what he said:

.....

Not to add that the prices of surplus ammo are going up and sometimes hard to find. Adding even more to that the quality is severly lacking, and for about the same price can reload your own and have top notch ammo that maximizes your rifle.
I have shot some cheap Wolf in my 223's hitting small stones and dirt clods on the mountainside, but they are nasty and my actual targets look like shotgun patterns.
Fun to pull the trigger for boom, but isn't thats what Black Cats are for? ;D

By the way, welcome to the Forum and to GBO.
Enjoy the site

The biggest reason is that the accuracy is terrible.  Different pressures, not loaded to tight specs and anything else are reasons as well.  My handi will fire the surplus ammo but the accuracy is terrible.  I am sure some one on here will provide the exact numbers on the shoulder of the cases and the thicker brass at higher pressures in ball ammo, but I don't have the link with me here at work.  In my humble .02, if it aint hitting what I'm aiming at then it is useless.
