open sites for a 12 ga round barrel

I have a 12 ga single shot shotgun with a round barrel. Can any one suggest a rear sight that might fit?

There are variuos sights listed in the Brownells catalog that can be fit. I would likely drill and tap and mount a receiver sight so that the overarm rises above the standing breach, between the rear of the barrel and the hammer throw.. Sweat on ramps are available that will allow the right hieght front sight..

I got a set of Rem 700 takeoff sights for $15 complete and carefully sweat soldered them an a 37A Winchester SS12ga for a slug gun. Had to correct the heighth of the front sight, but they worked great for a kitchen table project.

Here's some info from Brownells "Gunsmith Kinks", pgs 198 and 199:

A gunsmith silver soldered a front ramp on a barrel and it took 41-pounds of pull to break it loose.  Next he used a product called "Twin-Weld and it did not break loose at the upper end of his scale of 60 pounds pull.  He followed that up with Brownells' Acraglas and the front ramp broke away at 55 pounds of pull.  The gunsmith said that with the Twin-Weld and Acraglas you had much much more time to adjust the ramp alignment that with silver solder.

Someone in the Shotgun (Slug Guns) used JB Weld to put on a set of bases and rings on a shotgun for a scope mount.  There was an article in one of the gun magazines not too long ago that featured Acraglas to mount a front barrel sling swivel.

Oh, I have Gunsmith Kinks, Gunsmith Kinks II and Gunsmith Kinks III and I highly recommend them.  Gunsmith Kinks IV is out now and I will order it with my next Brownells order.

I have no problem with Twin Weld and Acraglas, but a sight ramp of any size if properly silver soldered on would be nearly as strong as the parent metal.  I wonder if there wasn't a prep problem and the solder didn't flow properly.  I would bet soft solder would hold at least that much.

Can't say.  I only quoted what the book said.  The point I was really trying to get across was that there are a lot of products available that will strongly attach a sight ramp etc. to a rifle barrel.

I think one of the adhesives would be a better choice for the hobby gunsmith.  I am just a little surprised that the silver solder joint failed like that.
