Hey guys have a wood stocked stainless steel barrel currently. Looking to get a heavy barrel and new stock for same. Would you please make some recommendations on good aftermarket barrels and stocks, along with good place to purchase from if you know of any? thnx.

I have a Green Mountain barrel and a Butler Creek stock on mine. I did an action cleanup and a trigger job, and have never had a misfire. It shoots as well as I expected it to (better than I can shoot).

I am thinking about getting a 10/22 Mag and doing a .17HMR conversion.

I too use Green Mountain barrels but I got my stocks from Royal Arms. Love those walnut thumbhole stocks. Lawdog

I prefer the look and feel of wood. The composit stock is quite stable even after getting wet, and the cost was right. I spent plenty on the action and barrel. Some day I will make one with good looking wood.

Look up Midwayusa.com as well. I would suggest a target hammer, that will improve your acurassy tremendously. I started with the same thing you have. I have a hogue over molded stock and a midway heavy stainless barrel. Acurassy is much better than a sporter, although if I had it to do over I'd probably have gotten the 10/22 target model and just bought a target hammer for it. With scope and all I probably have $600 in it, I could have saved $100-200 just putting a target hammer in a stock target model.

I just wanted to add that the midway adams and bennett barrel is made by green mountain, they are the best for the money. With the right load a target hammer, good scope and the right barrel will easily put you in the 1 moa range. With a bedded action and match ammo you could possibly tune it to 1/2 moa.

I have an Adams and Bennett bull barrel with a Hogue over molded rubber stock. Also has a Clark trigger job. With Remington sub sonic hollow points, I get a one hole group at 40yds. It is pure poison on squirrels.

Hi Broker

I'm a refugee from Marlin Talk, just joined your Great forum.

The only thing original on my 10/22 is the receiver. I have a .920" target bull barrel, VQ 2000 trigger unit, tungsten extractor, titanium firing pin, automatic bolt release, extended mag release with a 'hold-open' facility,barrel stabilisation unit, and last but not least I have made my own thumbhole stock and accessories with a cheekpiece that is adjustable for vertical and lateral movement.

I have reworked the bolt where it contacts the hammer to cock it by putting a larger radius on it (A tip from Rim Fire Central), and that reduces the cocking effort tremendously, and obviously the internals are all polished. this is a very smooth action now.

With a good ammo (Lapua or something like) this rifle is easily under 1 moa at 100 metres.

The only thing I am planning to do extra is to put the VQ 'Snake' barrel on it. Is is said to have the best harmonics of ANY 10/22 barrel with amazing accuracy. These are $385 from:-

I have always been a huge fan of Shilen Barrels, having owned several for different rifles and in different calibers. When I decided to build another 10/22 HB I chose one of their .920 inch Chrome Moly Match barrels and have had excellent results with it. Go to my Yahoo Profile at (rat31465@yahoo.com) Check out the pics of the groups that I have shot with mine at 50 yards (.126") and a (.588")@100 yards, these are both 5-shot groups. These are smallest groups to date. I re-worked the trigger myself, modified the factory stock and spent the time to break it in properly. Barrel was obtained from Midway for $225.00. I can whole Heartedly recommend Shilen Products...and No, I don't work for Shilen. Jus like their products.

Let me be the first to recommend the Butler Creek barrels. Besides the fact that they are extraordinarily accurate, I like the fact that they are 20" long. That extra weight out front makes for an even steadier hold than with the shorter ones that the other companies make. I recently put five rounds inside of a half-inch circle without touching the edge of the circle on a gusty, windy day with my BC barreled setup at 25 yards. The group size was between 1/4" and 5/16" on centers. In case you're interested, I used Lapua Club Standard, not exactly high-end match ammo.

The stock on mine is equivalent to the old Fajen Thumbhole Sporter. Boyd's sells this pattern as their Ross Thumbhole. http://www.boydboys.com/

Another great stock is the thumbhole silhouette style that Fajen used to sell. Boyd carries it as their Blaster 10/22.

As for action work, Volquartsen makes all the drop-in parts you might need to drop the trigger pull to about 2.5 pounds, or maybe a hair less. http://www.volquartsen.com/index5.htm

One part that I believe is an absolute must is the auto bolt release. Once it's installed, you won't have to fumble with that little doohickey in front of the trigger guard to release the bolt once it's locked back manually.

I would use the site to see what kinds of parts are available and then check with the various mail-order outfits which will give better prices. I've always liked doing business with Natchez ( http://www.natchezss.com/ ), Midsouth ( http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/ )and Midway ( http://www.midwayusa.com/ ). I just noticed that Midway is now offering a clear plastic Ruger 10/22 magazine for $15.99. It looks kinda cool.

The neat thing about the little Ruger is that there's very little limit to the level of customization you can achieve with it.
