marlin 336 trigger pull
« on: February 11, 2007, 03:01:18 PM »
Hi, I just got a 336 Xlr and while the trigger is relatively crisp the weight is too much I dont have a scale but it is a LOT heavier than another 336 a 30-30 marlin I own. I have worked on triggers on a Ruger #1 and ruger Super Blackhawk but Have No Idea of how to reduce pull on this Marlin 336 Xlr. I Presume that ther are Techniques that are specific to the Marlin 336 to reduce the pull.I DO NOT want to buy any aftermarket triggers ! I enjoy doing things like this but just need some information from someone who has worked with the Marlin336,Thanks Billy Craig

Welcome to the Marlin Owners club. We like our rifles except for the triggers....

The trigger pull can be helped out by reducing the presure on it by the trigger return spring. Combine that with some light polishing and you could have a halfway decent trigger.

Then there is the easy way out. Bite the $80 dollar bullet and buy a Wild West Guns trigger. You will not only have a super trigger with out any need for furter work, just drop it in and you will have fixed the dreaded Marlin trigger flop in one foul swoop. This is the route I would recommend.

Brownells has come out with a trigger spring kit for the Marlin. I have no experience with the kit, but it might be a good option.

Before you mess with the spring, try polishing the seer & full cock notch.  When I did this on my 336 it became so light it was scary (I used a fine grit EZ-Lap diamond sharpener).  I actually went back in and roughed it up a bit to be safer.  Just remember to keep the geometry between parts the same.

See my post in the Lever Action section.  I tried the Brownell's spring kit and like it so far.
