.500 S&W or .454 Casull in Contender Carbine?
« on: February 28, 2007, 07:39:36 AM »
Do you think the G2 frame will handle the .500 S&W or the .454 Casull? I'd sure like to have one of them. Or both...

Does TC chamber carbine barrels in those calibers?  I may have to buy one.

I know it lists a 500 Smith.  If it doesn't have a factory .454 barrel Fox Ridge will make you one I am sure.  This is for an Encore you understand.  Both can be to hot for a G2.

TC won't sell them for Contender and no custom barrel maker worth his left thumbnail will make you one.  If they agree to make one, RUN!  The pressures involved will take the Contender frame apart.

The 500 and 454 Casull are for the Encore only, not the contender, If you want a carbine Encore barrel they make a .500 and 460 and you can shoot 454 Casull's in the 460 Mag.

A little research makes me think my .45-70 Contender barrel can match ballistics with either of these rounds. And I already have it, all I need is a set of dies...

You can get in trouble with that one too.  Make sure you stay in safe levels for Contenders.  Contenders will tolerate trap door levels and not much more.   Really big boomers need an Encore.

And after all that wet blanket, have fun!

You better do some more research. I own all three and the 45-70 in a contender will not match either...

I was thinking about 25,000 PSI loading levels. If you figure the 18,000 PSI Trapdoor loading level is the maximum for the Contender, how do you figure the other two cartridges can top the Contender if loaded to the same pressure level? Their PSI levels are into the high 40s. This does not compute....Do you figure the Handi-Rifle is a better gun? It is factory chambered for the .444 Marlin, .44 Magnum, and .500 S&W, all at 40,000 plus PSI.

Here's a link to Mike (censored word) who says the .45-70 in the Contender can be safely loaded to the 28,000 PSI to 32,000 PSI level, or that's what I think he's saying anyway...   http://www.(censored word).com/FAQ/max_pressures.htm

I always heard that Contenders were safe with Trapdoor loads, any more use an Encore.  The Contender was originally designed as a pistol, and is a strong one.  An Encore is a stronger one.  I can't help you with the Handi.  I only have one, and it is a .223, well within safe ranges.

You will need to decide who to listen to when loading.

scrounger, the 460 and 500 Mag are at 50,000 to 55,000 psi. The 45-70 will not reach that level. Hay if you want to listen to Mike go ahead, but call T/C and see what they tell you. Why not get an Encore, it will handle the 460 and 500 levels. But if you want a handy, get one.
