Traded for Custom remington rolling block 40 65
« on: February 10, 2007, 10:11:04 AM »

          I just traded for  my first remington rolling block in 40 65 caliber.It has a rebuilt color cased  remington action and new wood and I believe it has a green mountain heavy octagon barrel and long range tang sight.Anyone have suggestions as to the best black powder loads and bullets. I am not familiar with 40 calibers,I have a 45 70 highwall.I dont know the value,the guy said he had about 2,100 in custom work done on it.I may keep it or may sell,I havent decided yet.Any comments welcome.

I sure like the .40-65, less recoil than the .45-70 and cases are easy to form from .45-70. I like the lighter 250-300 grain bullets with about 60 grains of 2f. I'm strictly a target shooter so I don't care about terminal energy, just group size.

Ron;

I can't tell you much about value. The lock/reciever has some value as a collector item. New wood will run $600 and up, then count in fitting and installing wood and hardware. Now we put on a new barrel, chamber it, taper it. Sights are not cheap.

I think at 2,100 clams, sounds OK to me.

      Thanks Bill,The uberti highwall I traded was good rifle in 45 70.I had paid $950.00 for it from a gun dealer last year. I had for the third time on gunbrokers and I had dropped the price to $750.00. I dont know why it did not sale,was good deal for someone.  I would say then that I made a fair trade. The sights are not marked but they are the creedmore type.Look like med to long range. I figure the rifle should be good to at least 500 to 600 yarsd,maybe more. Will be interesting to shoot the roller and also start loading 40 65.

 I have been using FFg Geox in both my 40-65's. As far as bullets go I have been using the Lyman snover and the Saeco 740.
Both these weigh about 400 grs. Been using 20-1 alloy. This is a very accurate cartridge it seems. Check the twist of your barrel as you might
want to try a bit heavier bullet in it.
