.30-30 to .30-40 conversion?
« on: February 23, 2007, 03:54:30 AM »
Hi all, it occurs to me that the old .30-40 would be about the perfect cartridge for the NEF. Less pressure than full throttle modern rounds, but better ballistics than the .30-30, and you could have spitzer loads without worrying about some damned fool stuffing them in a levergun. Aside from the rim size, it looks like the .30-40 has larger case dimensions everywhere the reamer would bite steel rather than air everywhere. So I guess after a ream job the only big task would be modifying the extractor?

It's been done a time or two & seems to work well for those who have done it. Maybe one of them will chime in

I had 30-30 done into a 30-40 last year. I got to take it out the first day of hunting season and got a doe. I absolutely love it. I am reloading for it useing the spitzer type bullets and I am getting half inch groups from it. This has become my number one hunting gun from now on. I had a guy in California do the smithing for me if you want his email address and what loads I am useing let me know.

Contact Randall Rausch at AR15barrels.com. He did a set for a group of shooters late last year. He has the reamer.
