I Need Some HELP!
« on: March 14, 2007, 08:41:41 AM »
Ok guys, here's the situation. I deer and turkey hunt on a friends property in NE TN. He has 40+ acres and has 175 and 210 acres on either side of him that we also have permission to hunt. Terrain is pretty hilly with thick woods, but there are places were a 100-150 yard shot are possible. We have been working hard for the past two years to better the herds with food plots, mineral salt licks, ect. Things are looking pretty good. Then, also about two years ago, people from Knoxville and other surrounding areas began bringing unwanted dogs up into this valley and dropping them off. They are feral as they come and will haul butt at the sight of man. Three weeks ago they got a big doe down in his back yard and mauled her so bad he had to shoot her. We have found several turkey kills on his property and the grouse and rabbits have completely disappeared. He also said he has heard coyotes on the ridge behind his house recently (I think it's the feral dogs barking and howling, but I could be wrong). But it's time to take them out. I'm going to use my 7-08 deer rifle. No sport involved, this is a murder mission only. I've been looking at the Cass Creek Predator Nomad call at Cabelas for $60. Anybody have any experience with this one? It's the one with the remote and 100 yard range. Also thought about the furball on a stick looking wiggling  decoys but don't know if it would work. I've got portable blinds and alot of good camo and a good pair of binos. What else do I need? Any advice (like wind in your face and sun at your back)? Fawns and turkey poults will start being born in May and I want the things gone before then. Thanks for any help in advance.

Tn Jim

Looks like you are on the right track with the Cass creek call and the wiggle tailed bait, it's just a matter of time. (Trial and error) until you figure out what is working for you. Be quite hold still and look and listen, That's the basics, The rest is up to you. Not knowing your country or surroundings its hard to give you a honest answer. Have you tried traps for the dogs, They should be easy to trap whereas the Coyotes are going to be a little harder to trap. Some where out there is the answer to your problem but its going to take some work to find out what it is. Hope this helps, And i am sure there will be others that have some ideas that will help you, I hope you can find the answer to your questions. Good luck Sir.......Joe......

Traps work good for feral dogs because they are out there 24/7...You can make one using 2x4s and using wire to cover (like a big rabbit box) and use dog food or old venison from the freezer to bait...This will also catch coons (not a bad thing)...

Flintlock.

I was thinking of double spring Victors or Blake and lambs or any Leg hold traps. But even domestic dogs that have roamed in the wild get pretty weary after a while.              How are you doing Buddy ?

If you don't have traps, One of your neighbors might have some they would let you borrow to clean out the feral dogs. I don' think you are going to do much good until you get rid of them. Take care.......Joe.........

A good trapper can clean out most of the feral dogs and some of the coyotes.  Have you contacted the state wild life agency?  Whether you're trapping or calling, if you make a sloppy set up, you've got an educated dog.  I don't know about a dog --they were just targets of opportunity for us down in Lauderdale county-- but a coyote will try to circle you if he is the slightest bit suspecious.
A #3 coil spring makes a good coyote trap.  A smaller #1.75 will hold them but the target area for their foot is much smaller.  They ought to work on a dog.

I always found the cottontail or rat in distress will call them in.A dose of 3" 4 buckshot will put them down.

Just a word of warning here, I dont know where you live but here in Ohio it is illegal to shoot a dog and the damn tree huggers will make sure you get youre day in court so just watch who you tell you are going to off a feral dog. Dont think they dont watch sites like this either, just be careful and good luck

I would hit the trapping forums. Connibears do a nice job snapping necks. Snares are also useful and cheap.  These are canines and you should, especially with the city drop offs, have no problem with dog food for bait. Nice, cheap dog food. (You could poison it, but check local regs first VERY CAREFULLY). As said, some might whine about "pets" so don't advertise. As said, local game or USDA animal Damage Control (government hunter/trappers) department may have a program or even a bounty for civvies like you if you bring in ears or scalp or ??? It is a pain that the citified have made and you won't be awful popular for cleaning up after them but it is necessary. luck.
