6.8 Rem SPC
« on: February 10, 2007, 05:29:27 AM »
Just got back from the Texas hill country and got to try out the 6.8 on a hog.  This boar came out just before dark.  One shot dropped it in its tracks and it stayed put.

Looks like a great hunt. What type of ar is that? I am wanting a 6.8 spc ar15. Any other hunting/shooting stories with this ar you would like to share?

Cheese, the AR is a DPMS with a JP trigger.  I bought the upper receiver used and to be honest, I still have no idea who made it.  I shoots an inch or so at 100 with sierra 110 gr Prohunters in front of 27 gr of  H322.  The boar was shot broadside in the shoulder at 75 yards and the bullet did not exit.  Must have done the job on th inside though.  I did not clean it, it was too big and stinky, and we already had enough wild pig.  We seem to be overrun with them and we had already killed and cleaned three.
I have been using an AR in 300-221 for the last two years and it has done the job, but I was always a little worried that it would not be enough for some of the bigger boars we often see.  I had the 6.8 that day and was glad I did.  I am still torn between which of the two calibers to carry during deer season.  The 6.8 certainly has done the job, the two deer I shot with it never knew what hit them, but I find that it too ruins more meat than needed for a clean kill.  The 300-221 has done well too, dropping pigs up to 125 to 150 lbs in their tracks, but I doubt it would have been enough on this one.

Regarding pig tactics, we have been trying to trap pigs by filling the traps with deer guts and other kitchen scraps, but without any luck this year.  All the pigs we have killed this year have shown up at the feeders.  We talked it over and will try a new technique.  Our pig traps are about twenty feet round, and since the pigs come to the corn feeders and not to our bait, we are going to try putting a feeder in each hog trap.   Anybody ever try that?  If it works I will pass it on with a picture of the setup.
