light, medium and heavy duty scopes?
« on: April 01, 2007, 01:29:50 PM »
Hi Folks,
I just got my RWS 48. I was considering a scope and doing a little research.
I came across this page http://www.straightshooters.com/navagationpages/scopetogunfitgrid.html and am wondering if this is accurate information. I don't want to spend more on a scope than I did the gun itself. I'm only going to be using it for pests and light hunting. Does anyone have this model w/a mounted scope? If so what kind? How has it held up? Thanks for the info.

The 48 is a powerful magnum springer and very hard on scopes.  The advice is good.  You might get away with a cheap scope for awhile, but scope failure at some point is almost guaranteed.  A cheap scope sometimes appears to be working fine, but a check for accuracy often reveals that the point of impact is actually shifting around. Getting a quality scope, especially for a magnum springer, will likely save money in the long run.  I have "lucked out" with cheap scopes on low and medium powered springers but it is a gamble. JMHO.

Magnum springers do require a airgun rated scope. Like stated before you can get cheap scopes to work but for how long??? I have purchased a BSA Airgun scope from SWFA that was on clearance becuase it was a discontinued model. It was the 3-12x40 mm with A/O for only 40.00 plus shippig. Not a bad scope or a bad deal if you ask me. It was regularly priced at 130.00. It is by no means a Leuplod or Swarosvki but it works just fine for my Beeman R9.
