how much?
« on: March 02, 2007, 01:02:02 PM »
How much side to side play is acceptable in the action?  I traded for a superlight 243 youth last weekend.  Shot it about 15 times and it has loosened up considerably.  My 204 does not do this.   ??? ??? ??? ::)

None with the barrel locked up, action closed. If it's loose only when the action is open, that's not necessarily bad, could just be a poor fit of the forend. If it's loose when locked up, it needs to be shimmed or sent back to the factory if it's a factory fitted barrel, the last 3 digits of the frame serial number should be etched on the left side of underlug on the barrel.

Last 3 digits match.  So, without forearm on it should lock up tight also?

Yup, forend doesn't need to be on for it to be shot, in fact, a way to find out if the forend is adversely affecting how it shoots, is to shoot it without the forend on, rested under the hinge. If it locks up tight with no wiggle or looseness without the forend on, nothing to worry about. ;)  Just be sure to slip the forend on before you hit the barrel release to open it, or the barrel will fall off!! :o

It is really loose without forearm on.  But, I can tighten the forearm screw up pretty tight and it takes alot of the slop out.  It does not pop open when shot but I don't like that side to side wobble

See the barrel fitting instructions in the FAQs, you need to check the barrel to frame gap with the action closed, good is tight on a .001" blade. If you can see light thru the gap between the chamber and standing breech at in the firing pin area, it's too loose.

If you can wiggle it at all with the action locked up and the forend off, it needs to be fixed.

Whether you send it in or do it yourself is up to you, but if it loosened up after  just a few rounds, it may have a defective, too-soft, underlug.  The factory is the only place to get this fixed.
