Remington Nylon 66 vs. Ruger 10/22 for selected commando use

I read in the book "Ruger & his guns" by R. L. Wilson, that "U.S. military adopted 10/22 as standard (replacing the Remington Nylon 66) for selected commando issue.  Navy SEALS were among the users of these arms.  Specially modified 10/22's saw limited service in Southeast Asia, in the Vietnam War".

I wonder why the Remington Nylon 66 was replaced, and why Remington stopped making them?  I have heard that the Rugers are reliable.

Anybody have experience with the 2 under tough conditions who may know? :?

I had a Nylon 66 some years back. Jammed with every type of ammo I fed it. Bought a 10/22 about 10yrs ago and I can't remember the last or any time it jammed.   KN

I had a friend in the Air Force who had been in the Air Force Special Forces in Vietnam.  He had a Blue Ruger MKI or II with a long bull barrel.  About the last 3 inches of barrel was a built in silencer.  I handled it and shot it on one occasion.  The only sound was the lockwork, tha action cycling and you could hear the bullet hit the target.

He said that it was his issue weapon.   He left Vietnam at the end of the war.  He was supposed to turn in his weapon when he left to a guy who was sitting them accross two 50 gallon drums and cutting them in halve with a torch.  He asked what it would take to keep the weapon and the guy just grinned at him and turned his back and he walked off with it.

It was quite a gun and he said it was all he carried while in Vietnam.

It was a Long Rifle.  Did they ever make a MKII in 22 mag?  That would be quite a gun.

The isreali army uses a Suppressed 10/22 for riot/crowd sniping.....
I don't know about the Nylon 66 though. The MKII is quite a weapon, and I have heard and read about them being issued in vietnam.
