M1A cast receiver strength

Looking to buy an m1a/m14 type rifle. Have been reading mixed results about S.A. Inc receivers as far as being out of spec.Also how tough is a cast receiver( how many rounds is it good for). Any help would be great. Thanks

I would all but guarantee that Ruger's rifle receivers are cast, and they seem to be pretty tough.

The current Browning Hi-Power receiver/frame is cast, since when they made the 40 S&W version, the forged frame wasn't strong enough.

The quality of a cast receiver or any receiver is dependant on the makers QC. As a process Ruger has proven that cast parts are quite strong enough.. They cast everything from rifle/pistol frames to slides.. They even cast parts for many other weapons for other companies..

Springfields receivers are fine. The issues show up with cheap Chinese knockoffs that guys buy, who want an M1A or M14 and don't want to spend the money to get one.  There was some talk a few years back about Springfields not being the same as what they used to be but I've never seen the difference and never found anyone who has either. I have two, one stock rifle, one completely custom, they are great guns. If you are still curious search out the guys who build service rifles for Camp Perry type shooting and email them, see what they say.

IMO the forged Poly Tech Chinese M14S are some of the finest ever made as were their chrome lined barrels.  Most of the issues with them were originated by folks that were trying to sell you something.

Yes, I would much rather have my Poly with a GI glass stock and a few other GI parts than a recent made Springfield... hands down. ;D ;D

I don't know about the chinese clones directly but some of the smiths who build competion M1A's refuse to work with chinese clones..

The early Chinese guns (those imported to USA) had issues with soft bolts - but the receivers are excellent.  They are forged - like originals - not cast.  Many now consider them superior to almost all US offerings.  M1A aficianados spend up to $800 for Poly Tech and Norinco guns just to get the receivers.  M14 Smiths, who know what they are doing, can replace the bolt with a GI and keep the original crome-lined Chinese barrel.  Probably should replace trigger group on early guns too. 

Canadian shooters report that they can still buy the Chinese M14S (M1A) dirt cheap.  Seems the 'soft bolt' issue has been addressed on current production.  If not for politics, we could probably get these for under $400!

The Phillippines were exporting 1911 clones and several parts including M1A parts.  I know for a fact that their quality control was severely lax 20 years ago.  They can do wonderful work, but their metallurgy was behind the times.  I don't know about today.  I know one of their 1911 plants was Chinese owned and it had better quality control than the local govt controls, as with any 3rd world country; money talks and quality walks.  The local soldiers and law bought only American or the Chinese clones for their personnal use!!!!
