Does neck sizing need lube?
« on: April 02, 2007, 05:08:26 AM »
Just bought a neck sizing die, Lee Precision, and was wondering if I need to lube the case or not?  Die is not carbide.  If I need to lube what part do I lube, just the neck?   When I am full length sizing I just spray the cases and re-size.  I then throw them back into the tumbler.  This part I would like to skip and not lubing seems to cut that step out.  Maybe I just need some other kind of lube and technique.  Any thoughts?  Thanks.

In most cases you do not need to lube with the Lee collet die as it is sizing in a strait wall of the neck and only sizing a small amount of brass , if you are doing a neck up or neck down to another cal. it is a good idea to put a little lube on the inside and outside of the neck .

That's one of the advantages of neck sizing. You don't have to lube and it saves a lot of time in reloading, over full length sizing.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

If your die is not carbide then it should be lubed. I have an old neck-sizing die and when I use it, I lube the cartridge neck on the inside and out.

Some do , but you do not need to lube the neck.

On Lee collet dies, there is no need to lube. On the calibers for which they do not make collet dies, I partial size and use mica as a lube. It is less messy, and just takes a dip of the neck into a bin of it to lube. Of course for my Browning semi-auto I would full length resize, but it likes the Federal Premium 165 Sierra so much that I (horrors) buy it factory ammo.
