Another NYer on the way home...
« on: March 24, 2006, 07:36:19 PM »
My grandson is headed home from Iraq after several months  near Ramadi in the Sunni Triangle, Al Anbar province.
  He is a Marine Special Ops. Only in "Indian country" for 3.5 months..but in direct , face to face combat virtually every day.
  My wife and I were down to Camp Lejeune visiting his young bride about 3 weeks ago. Since they have a home in the Marine housing community, I had some time during slightly more than a week to speak at length with several other Marines there.
  One, assigned to my grandson"s unit, is in charge of welcoming home those that return early...wounded, etc.
   He told me that to that point , out of 60 direct combat, spec ops Marines, there were already 24 Purple Hearts...
  No KIAs though, thank the Lord..although a sister company in the same MEU suffered 3 killed in one incident.
  Those new armored jackets etc is very effective..able to stop a 7.62X39  at point-blank range.
   Besides being a .50 cal MG operator in the "ring" atop a Humvee, my Grandson is also his unit's designated sniper.
   The Marine who welcomes back the returnees told me there is an unconfirmed story going around about my Grandson.
  Seems he engaged an enemy sniper directly across the Euphrates river.
  He successfully completed his task...eliminating his opposition sniper.
  About a week later a group of insurgents were brought in and interrogated. They told interrogators that they had heard there was a tough shot operating for the Marines in their area, so they sent down their "best shot" to take on the Marine.
  Praise God...their "best shot" was only SECOND BEST that day !

  Yes, the Marines had a big hand in his training...but his marksmanship was honed at an early age on those fat WNY woodchucks...

  He is on his way home..being in an MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unit) the entire strike force...ships, planes, choppers, troops and all move together.
  They are doing training of other nationals and completeing small missions while proceeding homeward..

Congrats Iron Glow...I can tell that you are extremely proud of that grandson of yours.  Words cannot express how much I appreciate and applaud the job that our armed forces are doing over in that inhospitable place.  Give him a big pat on the back from all of us...

Thanks Guys;
   Yes I am pleased with his performance.
  As I stated in the post, I have hsd a chance to get to know many of the Marines there at Lejeune.
  To a man, they are fine, dedicated and motivated patriots.
  Of the ones I got to know, I would be proud to call almost any one of them Grandson...

  Each of them said they were pleased to take trhe battle to the enemy in Iraq...preferable to having their families have to fight them back here...

Ironglow-  You and your family should be very, very proud of that brave young man.  Please give him our sincere gratitude for his service, and I am sure that I speak for all of us when I say thank God he is coming home safely.  I'd say that a hunting trip is in order for you guys!

KK;
  Now that he's aboard ship, he e-mails us whenever he can..
He says the first thing he wants to do back in NY with Gramps..is to go   " chucking "
....And I'll be proud to take him..I also have a Savage 11G in .223 that he will have to do it with..

    Like many Grandpas, I enjoy giving guns that I have used to my Grandkids as " keepsakes ".
   Most often, they are used very little...just enough for them to say after I'm gone.." This is Gramp's gun that he gave me ! "

    This Savage has only about 30-40 rounds through it..but I am inclined to believe that he has " earned " it !

One of the best things anyone can do for people in uniform is to thank them for their service.  I get the opportunity to be the first officer many soldiers, sailor, airmen and marines get to see before they ship to Basic Training.  I personnaly thank them all and tell them how proud I am of them before they start their military career.

Two months ago I was in Columbus, OH at a Flying "J" gas station and a guy stepped from behind a gas pump and said "Thank you for your service to our nation".  It made my whole year to have someone  say thati n person.  Don't miss out on an opportunity to let the future of our nation know how proud you are of them.

It truly is "priceless"!

 Culprit;
  I too want to thank you for your service !
  In re-reading the original post, I realized I had made a boo-boo I saying that he was only in direct combat for 3.5 months..noone gets off that light !...LOL  He was there from Nov through May...

   He is scheduled to return early next year.

   Right now, he's home for Christmas....and of course, he had to go to the woods and do a little shooting. Being his unit's designated sniper, he stays in practice.

     This time, we used my NEF .223 with old 4X Unertl...using military ammo...and just our bench we have down in our woods. We don't have a "lead-sled' or any of that fancy stuff, preferring to shoot in more like actual hunting situations.

    We did a little experiment, putting some of the hardballs on my belt sander and exposing some lead ( est. 15 grs).
   At the range, we put some water-filled plastic soda pop bottles "a way out there" maybe 100 yds..

        The exposed lead made some explosive difference, after we walked don to check the results, my grandson pulled the bottle caps off and set them up..then proceeded to knock those off ...bing, bing, bing..

...And he's only second top gun in his Marine unit !

  Watch out Haji...looks like you're in for it ...again..

  Another deployment coming up !

   Grandson will be leaving sometime in the next 3-4 weeks..back to Al Anbar..should pick up his Sgt stripes in next couple months.
  Would appreciate your prayers for him..and all our great troops, of course..

   We are witnessing the development of another "great generation" with those who are serving now !

We wish your grandson well.
Also, luck on a promotion.

My oldest son will be returning to Iraq in early May.
I believe this will be his 4th deployment to Iraq. He's a Calvary Scout.
Less than 5 years to go and both my sons can retire from the military.
