45.70 barrel and peep sights/front sight Q
« on: March 07, 2007, 11:38:10 AM »
I asked H&R about a 45.70 barrel Mod. # 457 with open sights, and I wanted to add Williams peep sight.  It is drilled and tapped for it, BUT rep said front sight would have to be changed. To What?

then I asked about the Buffalo classic barrel # W45, she said I could use that,
what I want to know is will the front sight on the buffalo classic barrel be ok using the Williams peep sight?   Did she say it was a "globe sight"?  what is that?

Or should I get #457 barrell and change out the front sight?

and anybody that has used the Williams sight, how do you like it?  What front sight do you use.  I have heard mostly good about the 45.70 barrel.

See the Peep and Firesights link in the FAQs.  ;)

The globe sight is what comes on the BC, it's a Lyman 17A sight, one of 2 heights they put on em, it's a dovetail sight, the #457 22" barrel front sight is attached with a 6-48 screw, not a 3/8" dovetail.

Tim;
I read the FAQ's.  What peep sight and front sight configuration (height) would you reccomend?

and would you order the #457 barrell and buy aftermarket sights or should I get the Buffalo classic and install peep and front sight, or is front sight on Buffalo OK with williams peep from H&R?

Is the longer barrel on the Buffalo advantageous?

Barrel length is a personal preference, I hunted several years with a Lancaster flintlock with a 34" barrel, so a 32" BC isn't all that long to me, but others may not feel that way about it and like short barrels. If you're a short barrel lover, the BC wouldn't be a good idea, you'd be unhappy with it. Performance difference would be no different for hunting at ranges the .45-70 is used for, the longer barrel does give a longer sight radius for a peep sight which is good for long range shooting, but that's not a forte of the .45-70 as far as hunting goes, just target shooting.

I mentioned that H&R puts one of two different front sight heights on the BC, the higher .584" is too tall for the WGRS peep, many of us had to swap it out for the .404" tall front sight. The other sight they use is .494" which works good with the WGRS, but the .404" available aftermarket, is the best for any long range shooting if you choose to do so.

The link in the FAQ shows the ramp and Firesight insert that's on my rifle, it's good for trapdoor loads that put the WGRS aperture holder about mid ramp, so you have some travel both ways, depending on the load.
