gamo airgun pig hunt
« on: September 21, 2006, 08:27:06 AM »
if you go to http://www.gamousa.com/Catalog.aspx?Action=Videos and click on Hunting Experience you will see someone kill a hog with a .177 airgun. i have hunted hog with a slingshot(in the past when i would do cazy stuff) and the one time i did it was hard to kill. for me there is airguns in the 30-70cal class the will kill hogs but the have 200-600 foot pound.

There comes a time when using too little weapon amounts to cruelty. The animal should be dispatched with as little pain and time as possible. Using an air gun, even for a brain shot sounds pretty close to cruelty, and gives PETA types something to use against us. The guy obviously got good shot placement, but if he hadn't we would have never seen the video, and it would have been a nasty sight. Just my $.02 worth.  How much does it cost to use a real bullet?

the airgun i used was from http://www.quackenbushairguns.com/  it shoots a 275 GRAIN ROUND NOSE  at 575fps. here is something about this gun from there site

The Bandit is a .50 cal. (.495) pre-charge 3000 p.s.i. rifle. The ball weighs 180 grains, goes 790 f.p.s. and produces 250 ft.-lbs.  This rifle was intended for use hunting white tail deer and boar.  Projectiles, such as the 180 gr. lead ball, have sufficient mass for hunting deer and boar.  Rather than making the projectile heavier just for energy's sake, it is better to raise the velocity for a flatter trajectory.  Game do not always appear at even increments of distance, or at your exact sight-in range, so the flatter trajectory is an advantage.  If you're shooting from a bench at a known and fixed distance, flat trajectory isn't important.  At varying hunting ranges it is very important.  All rifles are hot salt bath blued steel with a hand rubbed oil finished American walnut stock.

think as big bore airguns as a shotgun, the have the same range and will kill deer or boar at 50-100 yards.

Saw a program (infomercial) on this.  I noticed that the pigs were in an enclosure where they had little cover.  All shots were short distance, head on were the pigs was up against the fence and there was a few tree branches to hide behind.  All the pigs dropped at the shot, but all were rather small as well.   Not something I would intentionally do.

I have issues with people who laugh after shooting something... especially on video.  Do I enjoy hunting?  Love it.  Lets not let things get too callous though.  The animal deserves better and it makes us look like dolts.

i hate that gamo did that. It hard already useing a large bore airgun for hunting hogs. Stuff like that make people who want to use there airguns for small or hog size game not able to because the fish and game think the just curel toys. Last year as long as the airgun for small game could kill the the game cop would let you go and for hogs as long as in was 30cal or larger(the same for black powers)it was ok

Enough to make you sick. At least is does me.  I used their contact button and left a very long note.  I ended it with a request that they remove that video from their site.  I am going to email the NRA then tonight.  If you notice the NRA logo is splashed across the top of their web page.  I know that air rifles have been around forever. Hell luis and clark carried them across america, but has anyone else ever shot a squirrel with the 177 and had it run off. I have no problem with people using 30 and 50 cal airguns for deer and hogs, but this was discusting. please let gamo know what you think

i saw the program today called the  "outdoor guide"    he used gamo air rifle to shoot 2 pigs....i am sure they were in an enclosure but i did not see any fence and it if was an enclosure it had to be severla hundred acres.......anyway he shot a 100 lb pig and a 180 lb pig and both were killed more humanely than 99% of the other shows i have seen on tv .....most pigs on tv run after shot...these 2 pigs were dead on there feet.............i dont endorse it but we shouldnt fight against other hunters....someone may of seen another video than the 1 i saw but the 1 i saw they were not up against a fence......he did state that the shot had to be perfect and he did indeed pass up several close shots for better shots........what i got out of the show today was that they want you to buy 1 for small game hunting and they used the pigs as an example of the power of it and what can be done under perfect conditions....mack

Well,

I've taken my share of wild pigs, I enjoy using my 44 mag myself.
Usually I don't say much about a persons choice of tools to use when hunting, what I do like to tell my people that I take out hunting is "just remember that if you piss off that pig it is not going to just sit there and let you shoot him again so hit it well & hit it with a large enough gun that it is not going to get back up."

Enjoy,

Robert

Lets see, the hog was bayed up in brush, he wasn't going anywhere! An adult air rifle is extreamly accurate at 50yds or less. From the video, he looked to be about 20yds. I have no problem with this video, he probably shot him in the ear or through the eye at the right angle. I have watched worse things on the outdoor channel while they are bow hunting for deer or hogs. That hog dropped at the shot, what more could you ask for?  I think some of you guys have pellet envy!!! ;D

I have honestly not seen the video, but, have any of you folks ever
Raised and slaughtered pigs (Not Boars or wild hogs).
A .22 short behind the ear will drop them stone dead!
Apparently by reading some of the posts, These were small pigs.
My problem is when folks start moving up in size on the animals just to see if their
airguns will kill them. I have to agree though that this sounds irresponsible on the
part of GAMO.

I saw the show also and the pellet gun and the pellet he was using had a velocity of 1600 FPS. It was a .177 caliber gun. He also showed the penetration ability on a hog skull before the hunt, it easily blitzed thru it. The hogs he shot were at very close range, from what I could see around 25 feet or so and he made a perfect brain shot on both. They went down instantly. There was no fence I could see in the show. Folks can critisize him all they want but it looked much more humane than the hog hunts I have seen with a bow but again, one man's pleasure is another man's pain.....

I saw the show and both kills where very clean.

I wont be hunting ferral hogs with anything less than a 12 ga/.30-06 combo and a .44 mag as my back up with a hunting partner carring something similiar.  But thats me...  I would rather carry more and not need it than wish I had more when I needed it.

Thinking about this, of course both pigs shown were taken cleanly.  I doubt they would place a video on line showing a pigs running off after being shot and crying wee wee all the way home.   I wonder how many were not taken cleanly but not shown publicly?   I guess if it is legal, then more power to them, but I wouldn't try it, nor would I recommend it for anyone else.

Hopefully this won't encourage too many kids to go out and try shooting hogs with their Red Ryders and such. Airguns are good for their intended purpose (shooting tin cans) but for hunting????     ???
