.35 Cal. Lever Action Wildcat

I think a .308 win case shortened and sized down to the deminsions of the .35 Remington would be very useful.  The new case would be slighting larger in diameter, but otherwise it would have .35 Remington dimensions.  The advantage is the case could be made from any .473" diamter centerfire rifle round, 308, 30-06, 270, 7x57, 8x57.    It would not be able to be chambered in a regular .35 Remington rifle because it would be too big.  Although it would have a slightly greater volume than the .35 Remington, it would not be significantly more powerful.  Bear in mind, that more power is not the objective.  The objective is to get a .35 cali lever action round that is easily formed from cheap, widely distributed casings, unlike .35 Remington brass  that is sometimes difficult to locate.

.358 Winchester rounds would not chamber in it so there would be no danger of accidentally loading a full powered .358 win round.

I have both a 99 Savage in .358Win and a Marlin 336 (old one) in 35 Rem.

With cast bullets, there is no difference (other than the rate of twist and lenght of bullet you can get through the action).

A .358 Win Short is not a bad idea.  Then too consider a .35-30 - opening up the readily available .30-30 to .358 - that would work in 94's and 336's simply by rebarreling.

You would have then extended the family - .30-30, .35-30, and .375Win/.38-55 .

If I'm not mistaken someone has done the .35-30 but not on a production basis.

Ive never had problems getting .35 rem cases. Heck i even find them on the ground at the range up here!

YOu are obviiously not in metropolitican Southern California.  I can't find single gun store that carries .35 Remin ammo.  I agree that .35 Rem brass is out there, but it's not as widespread or as cheap as 308/30-06 which could be die formed into a "358 Win short"


My idea was kind of  thinking out loud.  For what it would cost to have a reamer, custom dies and a custom barrel made up, I could stock up on a life time supply of .35 Rem brass.  Probably a better way to spend money.

I think it would still be cheaper to order in some 35rem brass or ammo than to mess with changing everything custom reamers and dies are not cheap nor is the work to make it function.  A good shop should be able to order in what you want maybe even get a discount with a larger quantity.

The chambers of a .358 and .356 are identical. They are identical cases with the exception of the .30-30 rim added to the .356. My 94AE BB will feed, fire and eject .358 ammo. Needs to be loaded down about 5% though.
