Author Topic: which kicks worse 460WM or 50bmg (Read 2910 times)

I kow that the 50 has more energy, but the guns are usualy pretty heavy. the 460 weatherby is usualy built off a regular rifle like a mark v, not exactly a lightweight but not as heavy as a big 50. also the muzzle brake on the 50 seems to work pretty good. so i just want to know which kicks or hurts or pushes teh shooter the most.

A .50 BMG with muzzle brake has about as much recoil as a .308 Winchester, compared to a 10lb .460 Wby at around 100ft lbs recoil shooting a 500gr bullet at 2600fp. But I'd sure hate to pack a 30-50lb BMG around with me!!! :roll:

Recoil is not the problem, concussion is. I had 2 50 BMG's and I had to get rid of them. I got head aches shooting them.

With out a muzzel break, the 50 bmg would be a sure winner. Someone on here has fired on with out the break, I can't remeber but they had a pretty sore arm for awhile to say the least! :-D

A lot depends on how the gun fits you and how you mount it. I had one built on an ar15 lower........it was to short and not much fun to fire.

I posted a while back about shooting my 50BMG without the muzzle break, I thought I messed up my shoulder. I will never do that again. One time was enough for me. :eek:

I had one on a ar15 lower also. It was an 18 inch Ferret, and you are so right about it not being fun. I also had a Hesse 50 BMG with a 30 inch barrel that was a blast to shoot. I just did not want to travel 2 hours just to shoot it.

I had one that fit an AR lower and used a 1/4 inch rachet to screw in the bolt........assembled it weighed 41 lbs..........about 5 rounds was all I wanted at one time! It looked like an anti tank weapon, belched fire, had terrible muzzle blast and quite frankly, I was scared of a round leaving the range.......was supposed to go through a man hole cover at 1000 yards......just wasn't fun for me.........

I'd really like to try one of the $6000 Barrett autoloaders.......I hear they're sweet!

well, I think the 460 wm also comes with a built in muzzle break, I think it drops its recoil by over 55%... so your looking at about 45-55 ft-lbs of recoil (kinda like a 338 RUM without the break)

now for the big fifty, I couldn't tell ya, I never read much about them since the price of thier rifles scare me away

No clue what it's like to shoot a 50BMG but I do own and shoot a 460WBY in a Weatherby Mark V (took a nice buck with it this year also) and the kick is very light compared to other rifles I've shot.

The 500gr. bullets once touched off you know that you have fired a BIG bore rifle. The recoil isn't a KICK but a strong shove.

If you want a firearm to kick the shyt out of you, shoot a Mossberg Utile Mag with 3.5" Turkey loads now that is pain.

I don't think a human being can shoot a 700 nitro without a muzzle break... I honestly think it will break a sholder (we are talkin about 1000 grain bullet being thrown at 2700 fps.... ouch)

you know what, your right, its not 2700, its around 2100 FPS ..... I was thinking about the FPS of the .50 cal when I wrote that, sorry..

But still, 1000 grains at 2000 FPS, thats some massive recoil

warf73 and I agree on one thing. The 835 dose pack a punch. After looking at some of the numbers it is no wonder. With the fed 31/2" #4 it is shooting a 2oz load at 1300fps. Not as heavy or fast as some of the .50 rilfes but it is not a heavy weight. I have shot a few guns in my day and I do not remember any thing that was much worse than my ultra mag.

Gun design must pay a huge role in what we precive as recoil.

but for those of you that have shot biiger stronger calibers, 416, 458,470,500,577,600,700.. How does the 375 rum compare.. I don't fell the 375 rum is all that bad!

i have to jump in on this the 835 ulti mag with 3.5s are a true kicker..
it is my favorite turkey gun...i put a pro diamond scope on it because it shot to the right quit a bit.and i will tell ya after 5 shots with it, it hurt like hell, my whole head was busted up after finaly getting it where i wanted it.. i havent shot anything that kiked that hard, and i love recoil but like i said after 5 shots i dreaded pulling that trigger..
but aint it funny how you never feel recoil while shooting at critters, i broke my back a few years ago and had to twist my upper back 180degrees to shoot a gobbler and didnt even realise i had shot untill i was holding that bird by the feet..if i would have been shooting paper i would have been back in the hospital..

I've shot some 500 gr bullets at 2350 fps and the recoil wasn't that bad.

My 460 weatherby will kick your teeth loose off the bench but the 50 bmg with a good muzzlebrake kicks less than a 270. However the muzzleblast of the 50 is something to experence...
