how is the handi hornet for accuracy?

want to but a handi in 22 hornet, and was wondering how is the accuracy out of the box? i have done some research here but i want some feedback on group size. can they be an MOA gun?

The only time I shot my hornet for groups it was really windy ind it still managed 1.25" to 1.5" groups (winchester and hornady factory ammo respectivly) and really most of those group size was wind drift. So I think the answer is you have a very good chance. There was an article floating around a while back comparing the handi hornet to the A TC hornet I understand the handi did very well.

I think you'll find alot of happy hornet owners around here.


Even though there are plenty of higher performance varmint rounds out there (223, 204, 22-250, to name but a few) the hornet still has it's place. I really was impressed with it when I took it on a jack rabit hunt this past Christmas, sure I could have used the extra range of my 204 sometimes but I ended up with more of the rabbit left over after the shot with the hornet.

What is you planned useage.

Mine will shoot 10 35gr Vmax handloads inside an inch with over half of em inside half that, and I have to say those that don't get inside ½moa are more my fault than the rifle's!! Mine was a used barrel that I fitted to one of my frames, so it had some break-in before I bought it, but I did nothing to it cept clean it.

The "moa or not",  answer is yes for three shot at 100 yards and likely 5 shot in some guns depending on scope, loads & shooter.

this gun will be used for ground hog shooting around a farm. plan on going to gun show tommarrow.

The Hornet is the ideal 'Walk-around' varminter IMHO. I was warned off the Hornet by a friend of mine because it can be finicky to reload for. So I bought a 221 Fireball as a 'Walk-around' gun. It is not the 'walk around' gun I was looking for. Unless I am shooting in a wind-storm any groundhog within 200 yards is dead-- every shot(nearly) it is so accurate off a bipod. I still want to get a good 100-150 yard gun like the Hornet that leaves a bit of a stalk and challenge to the shot.

I would really like to get a Handi and put lam stocks on it.

All I can say is mine, with a good rest and, taking my time, I can can get under half inch groups all day long.. On a life sized squirrel target(paper), @ 100 yds, I was able to put 5 shots in the head, with 2 or 3 thru practically the same hole..

I guess what I'm saying it's a sweet round and can get the job done if you reload, and work it out...

I have a superlight that I get .502, 23 shot groups at 100 yds with with 35 gr Vmax. I did put a vinyl washer under the forearm screw to free float the barrel.
