O.K. It Looks Like a Chop-job for a 45-70 BC-NOT

There are no 45-70 Handi's in Canada but I have located a BC. I think I'll get one and chop it off at 26-27 inches and have the existing sights moved. Does anyone know if I'll have to shim the rear sight to allow for the front sight being on a larger diameter?

Also will there be any emotional issues in cutting down such a nice long barrel? ::) ::)

Tried to order a BC from Calgary but had the clerk check the two he had in stock for tighness. Both wiggled. So no BC for me until/unless they get new stock in :'( :'(

I cannot speak for you buddy, but for me there is an emotional issue in cutting that beautiful long 45-70 barrel, I am getting all misty just thinking about it....<><.... :'(


If we could think of a way I would happy to swap a like new 22" 45-70 barrel for your Buff Classic barrel, I would even throw in a few bucks. By the way, I get to Canada every so often, I drive in by car through NE Maine. It is a shame the the laws are so tough and convoluted so as to prohibit such a simple thing as a barrel swap, just a couple of pieces of pipe really without the other parts of the gun ....<><.... :)

Mc, that depends on the sight that's on the gun, H&R doesn't put the same sight on em all the time, the Lyman 17A comes in several heights, .404", .465", .494" and .584", the latter two being those used by H&R. If you need a different height, you can always order one from Brownell's.

There is no legal way of doing it that wouldn't cost more for the paper work than the rifle. We fully investigated it!! :'( :'(

From the others that have done what your proposing and reported it...I do think you will enjoy it...! nice thing you can always do as well...is do what Quick did with his...and open it up for the longer bullets...or even the longer cases as well if you want to...You have quite a few options with it...

I think 26"-27" is a great compromise hunting length tween the 22" and 32" barrel, Big Blue sure likes his!

I love that coloration of finish that is on that stock...I think that it is real nice...and is a very nice configuration...

I don't consider having a professional 'Smith shortening a barrel a "chop job". Nothing wrong with getting it to meet your needs. Should be no emotional issue involved.
I had mine cut to 24 inch because it met my needs. Go for it. Its a hobby! Do what you want.

I agree. While I don't like to cut back a nice long tube, as Mt 30-30 said, it's your gun...do what you want with it. Fill your demand.

Tried to order one of the BC's that FredM located in Calgary. To be safe I had the clerk check them for lock-up. Both wiggled. There goes that plan. Now what is the "Plan'. I plan to get a plan, but for now it doesn't include a 45-70 Handi. Oh well :( :(

I like the short style too. I had a Sav 110LE 308 with a chote stock. Tack driver at 300 yrds but was not right for the brush in central Fl. I then went with the T/C pistol for a while but it didn't take long to find what works best for me.
