Hey Guys,
I have a .460 and my buddy just got a .500, my gun came with sling swivel studs and a simple sling.
my question is this,
Of the guys on here who have a .460 XVR ( mine is the 12" hunter ) and are using a sling to carry it, and what type of sling ?
If any of you have any suggestions please tell.

Todd ill be the first smart ass and give my recomendation. Cut the barrel off to 5 inch and make it a handgun

about as much as those long barreled hand rifles! and wouldnt you know he had to ask about it in a 460!! Hell pal im still working on you so i guess i dont have enough time to try to convert another lost sole

Todd,
To answer your question, I have a 500 Preformance Center with a sling on it and it is definately worth haveing. It`s not just for carrying the gun but for shooting. Try your best 2 hand hold with the sling still around your neck then shove the gun fordward untill the sling is tight and is how much more steady your hold is. You can adjust the lenth of the sling untill you get it the gun where you want it.

Slings are for rifles!!! Not handguns!

Just a testament to how unwheeldy the S&W is can't carry it on your hip, to heavy to shoot with two hands- need stix for itn the field! Get a rifle!!

I guess everyones taste arent the same. I even have to admitt i started handgun hunting with a scoped tc. (and it had a sling on it) Even with all the ribbing it still takes a bit more to take a deer or other game at 100 yards with a tc or long barreled smith then it does a rifle and bottom line is id rather see a new handgun hunter with something hes capable of taking an ethical shot with and it that means a long barrel and a scope so be it. Most of them come around anyway. Hell even camel has a vaquero now!!!!!!!!!!!

What gets me is, "why comment"? If you don't like the 460 or 500 mag WHY even read the thread. This is the stuff that gets to me. NOBODY CARES IF YOU DON"T LIKE THE GUN. NO buddy ask you, if they should get a rifle. We made our choice to buy the gun and the last time I checked, you did not put a dime in for my gun or anyone else's.

Lloyd Smale, I know you and I rib each other all the time and I don't mind that at all.

But you know I hunt with both scoped and open sighted handgun. I have been handgun hunting as long as some of the guys here have been walking around.

Just like you said, we all have different taste. I just happen to like them all. Not to have the likes of 454Puma come here and try to make himself look good on our account. I would be more than willing to take him to a range and see who would do better at 100 or 150 yards off hand with a handgun.

I'll use that to heavy sling wearing 460 Mag.

Lloyd. I knew you were a closet scope on the handgun fan.

heck redhawk you guys got me convinced and i think im going to go buy a 4x12 for one of my 4 inch 500s Like ya said everyones got there opinions. Some are worth listening to. (not mine)

I hunt with a slung revolver - a 7.5" and 9" 454 FA. This is my preferred way to carry a big gun. For a few reasons, but the primary one is experience. When I hunt, I carry a daypack, and binoculars on a bino-buddy rig, and a rangefinder. The most comfortable way to carry a holstered scoped revolver is the FA chest rig, in my experience, or some other shoulder holster, which is just one more set of straps running around my torso. With a sling, I wind up much more comfortable and flexible and the gun is just as fast to get into action. I don't shoot with a neck sling - never have tried that - but some advice from those who do is to adjust the sling so that it is useful as a neck sling, and then put another set of clips on it to that it will take up in length to be useful as a carrying sling.

Mine is a 1" leather strap that I had Rob at Simply Rugged make, 36" long.

And just for the purists that think this is a sin, I always carry a belt gun as well.

Hey Guys, I didn't mean to get any trouble started up, I just had a simple question.

as for the 12" barrell .460, I LOVE THIS THING, It is my new favorite gun. I can't wait until deer season now. I hunt on the ground in some dang thick stuff here in SC and this smith is going to be a lot easier to handle in the thick stuff.
I can't wait to stalk down my first hawg with this thing too, it's gonna be bad day for him is all I can say.

hawgmaster, there was not a problem with your question, it was some of the answers that turned the thread around.

I have a 7.5 inch 460 Mag I also owned a 15 inch 460 Mag Encore, I always used a bandoleer holster to carry mine. I have a sling for the 7.5 inch but only used it once. I think the holster protects the gun more than the sling. But if I was ever stalking an animal I probably would go with a sling.

Hey Redhawk, thanks for the reply. I have enjoyed reading your post about the .460's you have.
I love mine, don't care what any of these other guys say.
I just got me a new chrony, went to the range today and shot several loads thru my .460.
I shot the Hornady ammo with the 200 gr. SST - 5 shots , you won't beleive the numbers I got
slowest was 2379 fps , fastest was 2415 fps, out of a hand gun, the guys at the range couldn't beleive it.
I shot some of my hand loads, 260 grain nosler partition on top of 43 grains of H-110 they shot between 1800 to 1850 fps.
The only bad thing is the muzzle blast is so strong that if you set the chrony digital read out box to close, it shows an error message about every other shot. I set it off to the side about 5 feet and it was okay then.
I will let you know how it groups when I get my scope, I am getting a Burris 3x12 for it and I beleive it is going to be pretty accurate.

hawgmaster, the 460 Mag is a great round in my opinion. Those reading from your chrony are crazy, that is cooking. I use the same load for the 260 gr. Nosler partitions, but I don't shoot them much, I have gone to about 98% hard cast bullets in my 460. I use the 300 gr. hard cast almost exclusively.
The only thing I don't like about my 460 is the compensator, I am thinking of sending it to a gunsmith and have them remove the comp and install a barrel nut to hold the shroud on.

I am very interested in your results when you get it scoped.

I tried this also and it works, the only problem being with the sling attached to the front sling swivel it tends to pull on the barrel. I ran across this at the local gun show for 10 bucks and because on a pistol it attaches both ends on the handgrip it tends to be quite steady. Because it is made from rubber and stretches, the adjustment for length is not as critical. Seeing as how my .460 is still at S&W under recall, I haven't had much time to practice with it, but am hoping it may be a viable alternative to a shooting stick.
