Finally Shot The New 71/2" SBH in .44mag
« on: March 14, 2007, 09:13:30 AM »
After an eon, I finally shot that new .44…She shot very nice and tidy groups at 25yds using the 240gr XTP jacketed HP with a light load of Unique.
I had some concerns once I had established a good group as I cranked that rear sight down till it had bottomed out and was still printing a bit high. Ironically, the last few shots fell into place so this might be a sight picture/grip thing to get used to. The next up will be the same bullet but with yet another grain of Unique. Hope I don’t end up needing a taller front blade. It may be a moot point if so as I have really been considering the Clements front post & the Bowen rough country rear sight.
I will clean the SBH up good & try again soon. The target can be a large part and I think that I will create a 2” white square inside of a 3” black square that will provide a little more definition and a finer aiming point.

I brought the .45 Vaquero along as a known control that would monitor the Shooter (namely me) and put eighteen rounds of cast through it after shooting that .44….The 3” black bullseye was obliterated! That Vaquero and my birds head Vaquero are like old friends though and this is to be expected just cause I am used to them.

youll really like the clements post! Personaly i prefer the bowen target sight to the rough country as there easier to adjust but thats just me. If you have clements make you one have him thin it to .10 along with a bowen rear thats my favorite sight set up on a revolver.

Don't know how light  your load is , but that could be your problem with shooting high.
Longer barrel time with lower vel will cause gun to shoot higher.
( for example I  have two s&w29's ,one with 6" barrel the other with a 8 3/8" barrel.
I shoot mostly two differant loads in them 22gr. of 2400 with a 240 gr. jhp, and 9 gr. of unique with a 240gr. swc.
The 6" gun will put both loads in the same group at 50 yards ,
The 8 3/8" gun will shoot the lighter load at least 7" higher than the heavy load at 50 yards with the same sight setting.
infact I couldn't crank the rear sight down far enough on the longer barrel to get it to hit the lighter load .
So i drilled and tapped the front sight and put a screw in it, then filed the head  down to the contour of the sight. this way you can take it out without adjusting your sights when switching back to the heavier load.)
You could  also load hoter for more vel. or if you want a lighter recoiling load you could go with a lighter bullet ,both will shoot lower.

Thanks Willy,
I greatly suspect that you are right on the lightly loaded rounds. I may be getting into the 265gr jacketed stuff for hunting, or even one of the great 300gr cast as listed both on this forum & the John Taffin pages so it could get worse before it gets better.
I figure it will work out well in the end as I can balance it out like a fixed sight if nessary. Your idea on the tapping for a screw is intriging but I will try the blades of Lloyds choice as an in between.
Thanks
