First time reloading.
« on: March 16, 2007, 03:01:20 PM »
Hey guys .Just starting to get my feet wet. bought a Lee classic loader for my 45-70. Ive got 40 emtpy brass( Remington) 1 lb of reloder 7 Waiting on bullets from midway  300grn remington jhp  Picking up some large rifle primers tomarrow. Planning on 42.6 gr  for a 1766 fps  . This is gonna be used for target & whitetail . What do ya think?? comments ,Tips, any & all welcome.  I tried to buy a manuel but gander mtn only had 2 choices. The guy at the counter said they werent rescent.  Also kinda nevous, but from what Ive been reading, as long as you do as the book says its pretty safe. Plus I ll be saving about 75 cents per bullet Like I said any tips are welcome. Thanks
I dont care what gun Im using as long as Im hunting

Congratulations on getting started in reloading.  My advice is:
1. If you can't get a manual, go on line to the powder manufacturers for data.
2. Don't trust any load data you read on this or any other forum without personally verifying it is safe.
3. When working up a load, don't load more than 5 of a particular combination until you find something that works.  It's frustrating to load a bunch of cartridges and find it doesn't shoot well in your bullet launcher.
4. Don't confuse yourself and think you're going to save a penny by reloading.  You will get to shoot more though

Read the instructions with the dies, lube your cases slightley if full length sizing and welcome to alot of enjoyable load development. The 45-70 is one of the easier rifle cartridges to reload and fun to shoot. But definitley get a manual or print off one from the manufacturers webpage.
99% of all Lawyers give the other 1% a bad name. What I find hilarious about this is they are such an arrogant bunch, that they all think they are in the 1%.

Go to the midway website, and also order you a loadbook specific to the 45-70. They run about 6 or 7 dollars apiece. Order you a Lyman 48 the edition reloading manual. Great man.! On the midway website, type in loadbook usa and hit go, it will take you to the books that are cal. specific.

What kinda 45-70 you got??  The Lyman book (and others) list two different sets of loads.  One or the 1886Winchester and the 1895 Marlin, and another set for the Ruger #1.

For the 1886, the Lyman shows a start of 36.0 and a max of 38.0.  For the Ruger #1 & #3, it shows a start of 38.0grs and a max of 45.0grs.

To work up a load you might want to begin loading 3 cartridges at a moderate charge.  Put them and a scrap of paper with the load data on it in a baggie.  Then load 3 more at a grain or 1/2 grain higher and put them and the data in a baggie.  And so on until you get to around 80-85% of max.  Shoot these and see how they look and how the load feels and which one is more accurate.  Go from there, easing more toward max is possible.  Once you get your best load with this technique, you can start fine tuning it with =/- one of two 10ths of a grain.

I figgered that would come in handy , as for the loads , the H&R will take the same loads as the Marlin will but your sholder may not  :o , i for the most part stick to the lower end Trapdoor loads for my H&R .

No sence in beating myself up to shoot and the lower end stuff groups better for me .

If you are just starting out you might want to look at the reloading book by John Lee "Modern Reloading". It lists loads and data but more importiantly it is a how to book. Being that it is put out by Lee it talks about reloading with the Lee equipment and being that you have the Lee classic loader it should be of help.....JJ

I second the manual by Richard Lee. It is very simply written for the most part and easy to understand. Charlie

I believe the Lee loader only neck sizes the 45-70 so you will most likely need to keep your brass separate for the Marlin and H&R. If you are using the dipper and powder combinations recommended in the chart that came with the loader you will have a low powered safe charge for either rifle.
With the right technique you can load accurate loads using a dipper.

Ask one of your shooting buddies that reloads to give you a helping hand getting started. It sounds complicated at first, but take your time and always double check everything as you go. Get a good reloading manual like the Lyman # 48. It will show you most of the stuff you need to know.  GOOD LUCK & GOOD SHOOTING.

Let's see...

1>  Maybe the cases weren't sized enough.  This leaves too large of an Inside diameter and the case will not grip the bullet firmly.
2>  The bullets are undersized.
3>  Not enough crimp.

Searching for the perfect left handed revolver.....

Finally shot my reloads today. Gun didnt blow up . so far so good. I didnt have a scope for my 45/70 so I mounted a reddot on it. At 50 yds the redot covered the 10 & 8 rings. so I was real happy with a 3 inch group. Got it zeroed, went to 100yds. Redot covered entire target. shooting 6- 8 inch group. real happy so far. Gunna get a 4 power on it & see what I can do. Also got my manuals in the mail lyman 48th & modern reloading by Lee. Good reading!!!  The BSA redot held up pretty good. Just not practical at 100yds

Jay

You did good buddy , yes stick a scope on it and your groups should shrink a bunch , 4x or even a 3x9 will do wonders .  ;) also try some diffrent powders when you get a chance as well as diffrent bullets .
