Leverevolution 45/70 problems
« on: June 22, 2007, 02:29:49 AM »
Very unhappy with new box of ammo.  Check out the Hornady website & see the "Vendor complications" notice stating a 175 fps. loss in muzzle velocity making it comparable to Rem/Win 300 grain fodder.  Don't expect same poi as last year's ammo or extended range & wollop.

Very disappointing.  I still have three boxes of the "old" stuff and haven't shot the new ones yet.  Rev

I no longer have the time and the space to reload, now I shoot mostly factory stuff.  I went out this morning and shot some of both leverevolution loads, the old and the new.  The POI for the old ones (2050 fps) was about 2 to 2 1/2 inches higher at 100 yds.  Not quite as big a difference as I expected.  Actually the newer ones at 1875 fps shot better groups in my LTD-V.  Under two inches no problem.  This rifle seems to like slightly lower velocities.  With this experience I will probably stay with them for a hunting load.  Rev

It seems the "Vendor complications" only apply to their 45/70 caliber;  I wonder why??

Because of the original published velocities being wildly overinflated and too many people owning chronographs nowdays learned thier dirty secret. The 30-30 loading is no diffrent

2215 FPS is a far cry from Hornady's 2400 FPS claim

I would be willing to bet MONEY that last years ammo is going the same speed as this years ammo when fired in the same rifle

krochus, with all due respect you are wrong.  I shot both loads yesterday in the same rifle and there was a definite and verifiable difference in point-of-impact, about 2 1/2 inches lower at 100 yds. with the new load.  I don't have a chrony but I can tell you they are definitely not going the same speed.  Rev

My guess is their lawyers encouraged them to back off on the .45/70 load for the same reason most factory .45/70 ammo is loaded to lower pressures.  Too many trapdoors and other older rifles out there.  Not a problem with the .450, .30-30, etc.  Rev

Then you don't know, then do ya! Without a chronograph you're just guessing. POI could be effected by everything from barometric pressure, to windspeed or even what rest your shooting from.I've had rifles where an extra 50 FPS moved the POI almost 4" and them I've had guns where 500 more FPS only move the POI half an inch. Using POI to guess speed would be like using how hot the heater is as an indicator of fast you're driving in your car.

Without a chrony you don't know anything, Heck I had an AG42 that shot a foot high at 100 @ 2300FPS, at 2450 the point of impact was dead on. POI can certainly go both directions. Just cause a load is slower doesn't always mean your impact will go down, sometimes it can go up. A 2.5 inch shift could happen with the same powder but from different lot numbers.

Ok, whatever.  You're the one who's just guessing without knowing anything.  You have not shot these loads and I have.  If the two were the same speed they would shoot the same on the same day under the same conditions.  Rev

The reason the 45-70 load is reduced by 175 fps is that Hornady could not get their "special" powder so they have started loading the leverevolution bullets over a different powder that doesn't yield the velocity of the special stuff.

If ya'll believe that hogwash about magic powders then I've got some nice ocean front property for sale in Arizona.

There's too many variables that could account for 2.5" @100 to base an assumption on velocity with that alone.

Actually there were not a whole lot of variables but I do see your point.  On this particular outing the two loads were shot from the same rifle at the same sitting.  There were no changes in barometric pressure, temperature, wind speed & direction, rest configuration, the earth's alignment with the stars, etc.  Under these conditions the same bullet traveling the same speed out of the same rifle should have shot about the same.  If I get the chance I will chronograph them just for curiosity.  Then you can pay me on our bet   ;)  .
Personally I hope they will not return to the "special" powder or whatever it is because I really like the new loads.
Blessings,
Rev

Powders do make a difference, as I have read of many 204 owners that cannot come close to factory speeds when they reload.  The do have the ability to "tailor blend" powders for a specific burn rate, and often these powders are not available to reloaders.

There was a notice put out about 5-6 months ago on the leverevolution ammo, stating that the powder is imported and might not be available for some time.

I think they should have put production on hold until then. otherwise people will lose heart and confidence in it.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!
