bought a 204 today.................finally!! now with pics
« on: March 08, 2007, 04:12:41 PM »
Been himming and hawing about buying one. Definetly decided that it was what I wanted. It was just a matter of when. Weel off island I went today and traveled the entire central maine area and guess what????????????????  NOBODY had one! I was with a good friend and he wanted to buy a 22-250 in remington 700. My intention was a NEF. Nobody had the 22-250 either. Walmart could not tell me when their order place was going to be in stock. Dicks sporting goods said the same thing. !00 miles later and only 25 from my hometown, I stopped in a local owned shop and although he did not have one he was able to order today and said it would be delivered monday!! Here it is a pop store did better than all of central maine. He has my business for a long time.
Details,
blued bull barrel 24 in  with wood stock 225.00. I thought that was pretty good. Course there is taxes etc etc. a box of shells. I already have the scope so by next weekend I am going to find out if all I expect from the 204 is to be realized.
I debated on the howa 1500 in 204 but there again, noone had one or could tell me when there supplier would have them. How can they sell guns if they do not have them? Everyone I talked to said the 204 was not a big seller. I asked them if they thought sales would pick up if they actually had them.............instaed of say pushing what was on the shelf. Noone had a good reply.
Anyway my buddy had his ordered and it will be in the same day. Supposedly the 204 and the 22-250 are close in distance accuracy and speed. Wee will definetly have a side by side comparison soon. Now I have to buy the dies, cases, bullets etc.

Dont believe all of the 204 vs 22 250 hype. both are about the same speed, just a little more expansion on the bullet with the 204.  (instead of a violent fragmentation (204) the 250 is more of a controlled fragmentation.  Not hardly any difference at all, plus the 204 burns wayyyy less powder.

Definately have to let us know how it shoots. Don't suppose you could tell the name of the shop you went through could you? I spend some time in Maine on occasion so it would be nice to know of a good gun shop.

I had the same type of experience with my local shop on my .223 stainless/ synthetic.  Price was as good as anywhere else and had the gun in a day. Bought the scope online and had them mount it at the store.  NEF actually shipped in a blued barrel handi on their fault in one day.  We let them know and the stainless was there in one more day.  I say great response by my shop, but also by NEF.  Plus the shop through in the rings and mounted the scope for no extra charge.  The mounting is sop for them, but I thought the free rings was a nice touch.  Any reason why this wouldn't be my favorite rifle?????

Let me know how that .204 does, I am really looking at one right now.  I know darn well I don't need one, but the point is I really want one ;D

Good luck ether way and welcome to the site.

I think every one needs a 204 just like they need a 45-70. ;)

Well it is sighted in now. It did not take that long either.I have it 1" high at 100yds. I was shooting off my desk in the house out the window. I was not all that comfortable but it shot very nice. The recoil with the heavy barrel was  very slight and I was impressed how I could see the paper hole in the target before I felt the recoil. I only have one box of ammo and now have 5 bullets left. So much for any more fun shooting till the midway supplies come in. The gun is pretty hefty (did not weigh yet) but the bull barrel, scope and 9-13" bipod, assures that your not gonna want to walk around with it. I amy even come up with a pic tonite and post it. I know you all know what they look like but........ it is my newest born and I just have to show it off!

The name of the store I bought this thru is  MEDOMAK RIVER TRADING POST

here it is. I was going to try and weigh it but our only scale in the house is a digital weight watchers scale ( my wife is a instructor? or whatever you call the people that put on the classes). And i would lose the ability to shoot for awhile if I used them when she is not here. They need to be plugged inand checked out etc. Any way I think the wood is pretty nice on it. The barrel looks like it is spiral but it is not.

Mogley,

Hey nice rifle and setup! Sounds like it shoots good. You made me miss Maine though saying you were shooting from your window. Thanks for letting us know the gunshop you used too. Another shop in Maine that is good and gives great customer service is Bennet's gun shop in Freeport. Although I dont' know the distance that is from you. Paul is an interesting old man to talk to and so are all of the old gentlemen that hang out there. Hope to see some pictures of some close groups next! :P

I have heard of bennets. He has a lot of really nice guns. Freeport is a hike for me. I live on an island 3 miles off the coast of Lincolnville which is between rockland and Belfast. By the time I wait for  the ferry and all, it is a full day of travel downand back. When I do go though, I go to Kittery trading Post. That is a great place for guns of any kind. Big selection and they are right there for you to pick up and try. Not to mention reloading stuff and every accesory you can think of. Probably a really good thing I do not live on the Mainland, I think I would be broke and divorced again being so close to gunshops.... ;D

I reloaded some bullets. 32 gr v-max. 22gr 4198 powder. here is my target with 2 5 shot groups

top photo is a straight 5 shot group. The second photo, shots 1 and 2 were before I went 4 clicks higher. shots 345 were pretty tight. It may not look like it but total distance between the furthest points is 3/4". A quarter completly covers the entire groups. I am pretty happy with it at this point. I loaded 10 more of the same load and then loaded 10 with 23 grains of 4198 for a comparison. I am not going to adjust the scope as I am more interested in groups. When all is said and done, I will sight the scope to the most accurate load and call it good.

Great, I am semi-patiently waiting for my .204 and .50 barrel. I ordered the scope for the .204 and the reloading supplies for both and it came close to the price of the two barrels.

Oh well,

Thanks for the pics! Looks like you have a real shooter there. Those were some impressive groups. BTW I am semi familiar with that area up there, and I have been to ktp. I bought my Marlin 1894C there. Heaven on earth! For anyone interested in checking out their website and browsing their firearms it is www.ktp.com.
