 :)Anyone shootin' any?I have a '52 made one,,4" nickle(1/2 gone),,,I shoot Kieth's load and it's a cannon,,,folks are amazed it is a .38 Spl. not a .357 'cause of the N frame!!! :o :o

My brother bought a nickle S&W 4 inch .38/44 not long ago that was in almost mint condition. You can sure tell that it has a much larger bore than a .38 special.  ;)

Oops (Correction, a S&W .38/40, not a .38/44)

The 38/44 is a .38 special. Perhaps your brother has a .44 special?

After you mentioned that, I had to check again to see what he had bought. The pistol he bought was a S&W 38/40 which is now obsolete, but ammo is still available at a few places. The gun shop had some 38/40 ammo in stock so he bought some with the pistol. The 38/40 uses the same diameter bullet as a .40 S&W (.400 diameter).

I used to own an old S&W .44 special and wish that I had never sold it now.

your 38/44 was the predisessor to the .357 mag. It is a brute strong .38 special. ITs basicaly a 38 special on a 44 magnum frame.

Close L loyd,,,the model preceeded both.357 and .44 mag.,,,it's on a .44 SPECIAL frame,,drilled in a .44 cylinder,,but the Kieth load (that I 8) got direct from him)is hot as .357 in a 6",,I get 1300+ from a 4'',,his load chronoed at the Remington plant,,even in the N-frame it kicks like Jacobs mule--------a real dragon!!!!!!!!!!,,I am lookin' for a new load,,,a 200 grainer at a even 1000 F.P.S. 8) 8).Al,,I'd love to have a .38/40 double action,,might get a .44 Spl. and convert it,,sold a colt new service in the '80's in .38/40,,,didn't want one then,,,realrare in the new service.Hey Savage,,,thats my last name!!,,you a Savage or is it a screen name? :o :o

I think what Lloyd was saying is that the 34/44 was built on the "N" frame, which is the one S&W chose to chamber in .44 mag. 
BigLost, Savage is my nickname, hung on me some years ago by the guys I served with. Just seems natural to use as a screen name as my friends and associates know me as Savage. Good shooting!

thanks savage i thought it was clear enough that i meant it is was built on the N frame. the 44 mag didnt even exist then.

No slap at you Lloyd,,but just mentioned it as a lot of folks have said when finding out about the .38/44 that they didn't know there was a "N" frame till '55 when the  .44mag.came out,that the 1917 and the triplelocks were on a smaller frame,sorry if I slighted you,,just habit I guess.Yea Savage,I know what ya mean about nicknames,,I was in 125mm gunmount during live-fire/rapid-fire and my 2nd loader laid the a 85lb.H-E in the trough before the last round was on it's way(caught up in the cadence) and everyone else bailed out,,without thinking about it I reached in and lifted the round out and the gun went off as I lifted it clear,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,THATS WHEN I STARTED TREMBLING!!!THAT WAS CLOSE!!!,,,when my crew came back to the gun that obviously not  blown-up,,I looked at the and with false bravado stated ...."NO SWEAT!!...",so I got tagged with NO SWEAT for the rest of my tour,i'm pretty sure nothing would have happened anyway but a jammed gun.
