Question for 280 owners

I am going to get a 38-55 barrel first, but still have a hankerin for a 280.  I had one once before but it was off center and not accurate.  I read one topic about this not too long ago, but am wondering how many have a GOOD setup compared to the bad ones.

I still have the dies and brass and hate to see it go to waste. ;)

Mine was very accurate..


The cheap Stuff...Remington 140 grain Core-locs 10 shot group



And the Expensive stuff...Federal 140 grain Trophy Bonded Bear Claws


All shot same day...100 yards

Mine looks perfect to my eyes, but I didn't measure it. It looked good enough to Wayne York to ream to a 40º Improved chamber, he would have told me if the barrel wasn't worth the effort if there was a problem.  ;)

It really chaps my hide when one or two defects in a certain caliber sours the entire lot of em, the .280 is one of the best shooting and most popular of all the Handi calibers, I wouldn't let a couple lemons ruin its reputation.  :-\

Same for the .25-06, another real popular Handi,  mine shoots excellent, but Fred had a real problem with his, Lik2hunt is the only other one I recollect that was a problem, and H&R bought his back from him along with the barrels he had fitted to it!! It don't get no better than that for customer support if you do have a problem! ;)

I had a bad chamber on (1) 25-06...the rest were fine...and they replaced it without any hassle...and I didn't notice if my 280 was off or not...If it was it didn't hurt my groups any... ;)

I have no complaints about mine.
The bore is on center and it shoots 1-1/4" groups with 140 gr Remington Core-lokt (sp?) ammo.
It locks up tight as a drum and spits the empty shells three feet over my shoulder upon opening every time.

Ive only had mine for a little over week and only one range trip. I really like it. without any tweeking, I was able to get 1" groups ,with a couple even less. Mine is the extracter model which will take a little getting used to. another thing I noticed about the .280. I shot 60 rnds in one day and my shoulder never hurt, could have shot 60 more.

i have a RMEF 280 that seems to shoot moa.  my son got his antelope last year with it. also has 223 barrel now that gets with the prairie dogs.

Great, looks like my first one may have been a fluke.  Will keep in the list till the funds are here.

This is a little off MY topic, but Mac and Tim, I think both you guys have the long chambered 45's (ie 45-110 etc) and I am thinking of doing something silly like that with the 38-55, IF the barrel shoots well in the first place.  Where would one get special dies for say a 3" 38-55 case?

Does Lee do this?

Opps Sorry...I thought you meant the 45's...Check the Obscure cartridges Mid Way has...I saw some 38-70 and bigger in there..

I recently bought a 2006 .280...Tho I didn't actually go to the range with it...with only polishing the barrel AND shooting 165gr Core Lokt I was able, after a few adjustments, to destroy small apples at 100 paces...the range was full but we still wanted to shoot ;D I haven't messured anything but my barrel LOOKS right to me and I'm pretty sure it will shoot plenty good. Just my $.02
