45-70/460/500?
« on: March 03, 2007, 02:19:01 PM »
I'm looking into my next barrel and I'm having a little trouble.  I reload, so the advantages of the 460 being able to shoot 3 calibers isn't very big, and the price of 500 ammo isn't a huge factor either.  I'm not sure if it'll be scoped, but if so it'll be a fixed power.  It'll mostly be for pig hunting and plinking.

All three would work just fine. Get the one you think you would like the most. The 500 is a fun round.

That's what I had heard about the 500, so that's one of the main reasons I'm considering it over the others....nothing like some good umph.

The cool thing is, you can use a 275 gr. bullet up to  700 gr. bullet in the 500 Mag.  ;D

LOL, I'm sold.  Jesus...rabbit hunting with a 700grn, lol.  I was looking into getting a muzzle break also for whatever I get.  I like the "Howitzer" that Eabco offers.  It looks very cool, but I've yet to see anything about other than their site.

The 500 is good for about 100 yards right?  Of course depending upon load.  What length of barrel would you go for and what barrel contour?

Thanks Redhawk

I really like my 460 15" Encore, very accurate and I enjoy the 3 different rounds.......

A friend of mine has a .50 Alaskan , not sure how it performs on game....but that is pure fun !  We were shooting at 300 yds at a gong...after recovering from "mild" recoil, you could look out over the barrel and watch the tracers lob into the gong...or the incendiary rounds explode onto the steel plates....believe he got his barrel fron SSK.

Personally I prefer the 45-70 myself, have an 17 in encore barrel that shoots 540 gr bullets very well. I know it worked great on an American Bison at 124 yards, Just my 2 cents worth.

I chose the .500 because of the modern case size. The .45-70 case is just too big for smokeless powders, especially if the rounds are downloaded. I download a lot for fun shooting. Some love recoil, I tolerate it when I need to. I like having the potential, but don't need to use it every day.

The secondary reason I picked it, is that .50 caliber is just neat.
