« on: March 08, 2007, 02:02:10 PM »
Would a Remington Rolling block be better than the Springfield ? (I once oned an original in .43 spanish or some6thing like that also a 7mm mauser)
What single shot hammer gun would y0u guys suggest ? It has to shoot a black powder cartridge.

You cant really go wrong with any of them, Rollers, Sharps, or the Ballard type receivers.
For hunting I think a 28" barrel is just about right.
I like my 73 trap door carbine in .45-70, nice and light and good balance.

Of all of them I think I liked the Springfield best.  Mine was a Second Allyn, Model 1866 with a carbine length barrel.

A couple of things were very much appreciated in the field.

First was the weight or lack there of.  It was nice to be able to carry it all day and not be beat at the end of the day.

Next was the sling swivels, not found on too many other BP rifles.

And third was the sights.  On mine they were replacemnets so I guess it doesn't count as you could replace them on any rifle.

I did like my Ballard but it was not chambered for a big enough cartridge and my rolling block was a heavy beast.

Yeah, it would have to be the trapdoor Springfield.

Whatever you choose will probably work until you want something different.

Good Luck.

I like my rolling block, short and reasonably light and quick to reload. But as the other posters have said, it's hard to go wrong with any of 'em if you can shoot it well. A trapdoor carbine would be pretty nice to have. I had heard they changed the rules in MS to allow BPCR rifles, seems kinda odd since you're really not giving up anything to a smokeless rifle except range. They must have a whole lot of deer they want to be killed.

True, they did change the rules in Ms. Thats why I'm looking. I would rather hasve a lever gun Henry 66 or win. 73 but they aren''t legal. It has to be a breachloader, have a hammer and shootBPCR but subitute Bp can be used.  Now to find a Springfield 73 carbine that I can afford. Boy those Urbuti are expensive but thats the one I would like.

You don't have to use black powder cartridges. The rifle just has to be of a type designed before 1900, or a replica, single shot, exposed hammer, and at least 38 cal. Smokless cartridges are ok.

So the H&R single shots would be legal ? I think they make one in 45-70 and it CAN use smokeless powder ? I believe they will take a scope(Not sure) but that is the cheapest rifle I can find.  Even though I would like to have a repo Trapdoor or Remington rollingblock They are just too much money. So this rig would be legal for the Ms. primitative season  ? I sure don't want to spend the money and get in trouble for using the wrong thing.  Thanks for the information.

Yep, the Handi in 45-70, 44 mag, 444 marlin and 38-55 are legal. All are good deer rifles and the stores can't keep them in stock since the the law changed. The big bores are such fun to hunt with, they're all I use anymore. They're not beanfield rifles, but if you hunt in the woods, they're all you need. You can go to the Miss Dept of Wildlife website if you want to read the law for yourself and the examples of approved rifles.Oops, forgot 450 marlin and 500 s&w.

Well I reread the regulations and it says a metalic cartridge single shot with a hammer is legal. BUT it also says they must be loaded with blackpowder or a substitute. "Breach loadibng single shots must have an exposed hammer and use metalic cartridges loaded with with blackpowder or a blackpowder substitute and sutiable primer and lead projectiles" modern smokless powder is excluded.
SO I could use one but the cartridge must be loaded with BP or a substitute. Now where can a guy buy some 45-70 cartridges loaded with BP or a substitute ? I don't have the equiptment to reload them myself.

Several companies load black powder ammunition. Goex comes to mind right away and one source for their product is Buffalo Arms.  http://www.buffaloarms.com/ Good luck.

Country Boy, You misread the reg. Please go back and read it again. Believe me, this thing has been worn out as much as anything I have ever seen in the Miss dept of wildlife forums. Smokeless cartridges are legal. I have been using Federal's in my 45-70's and Buffalo Bore in my 38-55. It must be confusing because right after the part about single shot rifles, the reg goes on to say that muzzleloaders must use black powder or substitutes.

Obviously, it depends on what you are hunting.  Most fellas want elephant blackpowder guns for white taill.    NEF about has the corner on the market for hammered single barrels.     I have an old H&R Shikari in 45-70 with the brass cleaning rod.  It is one heck of a "trunk gun."  (keep it in the trunk for those unexpected opportunities to hunt or shoot.)    Smokeless or black powder works fine in it.  The sights aren't really for long range sighting. They are much too wide for fine target sighting, but for drawing down on a white tail at 100, the sights are just right.    It has done in wood chucks, deer, roaming dogs, a few cats, and even a wayward bull. It has come in handy to dispatch animals injured on the road etc.

Years back a friend had an H&R in .357 Maximum.  Right handy little gun also, and the cartridge did right well on deer.
