IMR/Hodgdon

My supplier was out of IMR 4350 and 4831. And wasn't going to make a purchase for several weeks. However he had the Hogden, and he said they preform the same.
I have really good loads with the IMR powders and don't want to spend 40 dollars to find out if they are equal or not.
Will they preform the same with the same formula?

They may be close to the same burn rates but are not the same powder and should not be used interchangeably , here is a link to a burn rate chart to look at .

IMR4350 = 137
H4350 = 140

IMR4831 = 146
H4831 = 152

In a word NO! Might be close but they are NOT the same powder and they do NOT have the same burning rate so you MUST NOT use precisely the same charge when switching. As I recall the IMR is a bit slower than Hodgdon but I'd not wanna bet the farm it's not the other way around. You normally need to change powder charge at least one and often two grains between max charges of them and even then you cannot be sure the accuracy or point of impact will even be close much less the same.

While H4350 and IMR4350 are reasonably close, your "supplier" is an idiot for suggesting the H4318 and IMR4381 are the same.  From the 2007 Hodgdon's manual for the .270 WCF and 130-grain bullets:

60.0 - H4831 - 3019 fps - 51,000 cup
55.8 - IMR4831 - 3002 fps - 50,100 cup

If you used H4831 max data for IMR4831 you would be 4.2 grains over max - that would wake you up.  If you used IMR4831 max data for the H4831 powder you'd be almost 200 fps slow - that would pi$$ you off.

If my supplyer gave me that advice, I think I would be looking fon another supplier. Advice like that is not only wrong it is dangerous!

I agree. They are not interchangeable.
