Neck U eck Down for 6.5mm-06?
« on: April 04, 2007, 03:31:59 PM »
I hope to be getting a 6.5mm-06 soon and was wondering if was easier to neck down 270 win. or neck up 25-06?

Hi
I think the 270 case is a touch longer than the 06"s... My 30-06's go all the way down to 22-06's.  You can go down in steps 30...7mm...6.5mm.  I 'LOVE'   Imperial Sizing Die Wax It makes the world a lot easier. For a joke I made a friend a 7mm Mag. case necked to 17, also made him a 20 on the 7 mag case.

I just fireform 25-06 with cream 'o' wheat and Bullseye powder. Works for 6.5-06 and 6.5-06 imp. But a straight neckup with a tapered mandrel works too.

IME it is usually better to neck down a case. In this instance there is little neck diameter difference between the 6.5 and either of the other two.  Necking down gives a slightly thicker neck, which can occasionally help slightly with accuracy in the normal chamber with its large neck.  Too, neck thickness is usually more even when necking down rather than necking up.

I think the necking down process is less work, I do both. Watch the neck thickness, I think that may have been the reason why I kept, literaly blowing up a 6.5 Gibbs :(
