« on: March 21, 2007, 12:21:02 PM »
Ok guys I have a problem with my reloads. I loaded up 25 rounds 5 each of 27, 27.5, 28, 28.5 and
29.0grs of h4895 2.150 col horady 125 soft points. All of them shot about 1" groups all look about the same. Factory rem umc will shoot .750 @ 100yards all day. Whats the deal ???

The powder might burn at a different pressure than the Remington factory powder.  No offense, but maybe there is something wrong with your technique.

I would look at the overall length of cartridge between Remington and your own.  It is an easy fix.  But the issue is really the distance fo the ogive of the bullet from the rifling not the actual overall length.  Are the Remington and Hornady bullets shaped the same?

i would try a different powder.  Kinda expensive.

I would try a different primer.  Not very expensive.

You know, I bet that the Remington ammo is .308.  Maybe that is what the difference is.  The Hornady 123 SP's are .310's maybe its some weird reverse bore size thing.

blue brings up a very good point. The millatiry rifles are .310 to .312 bore dia`s. and I would guess your`s is .308, but you should make sure of your bore dia. and use that size bullets. I do not have data listed for 4895 in any of my manuals for the 7.62 x 39 so I would guess that it is not one of the better choices of powder for that round. Check you manual and see what powder gives you the best velosity and try that powder. Not always, but most of the time the powder that give you the best velosity will also give you better groups than most of the other powders. That does not mean the best group will come at the highest velosity.

H&R has told numerous Handi owners, including myself, that the bore of the now discontinued 7.62x39 Handi was .310", what it actually is could only be determined by slugging the bore of your rifle.

Mine likes the .311 .312 bullets and AA1680, IMR 4227 works well also. I've gotten real good results with 150gr british .303 bullets and AA1680 surplus powder I picked up from GI Brass. 8)
