Kevin,

Those surplus John Inglis-made high powders were used extensively by the Canadian Forces.

During it's long service life, there were a couple of hammer, safety, and sear modifications made to issued guns resulting in non-compatibility of mixed parts.

Is it possible that your pistol has the wrong combination of hammer and sear?  The mixed up ones I've worked on either would not go on safe, or release when put on safe, or would not reliably fire when cocked.  Check the hammer and see if it was "II" stamped on it, indicating this modification.  You may have to find some compatible parts to repair it.  Did it function properly before you disassembled it?

A another thing to check is the trigger sear linkage that goes from trigger along the frame, up to the slide, and back down to the sear.  Any dirt or debris in this area can stop the hammer from releasing when trigger is pulled.

Put an empty magazine in it and try.  High Powders have a magzine safety that is actuated by the magazine pushing a tab outwards which through a linkage allows the the hammer to drop.

i was aware of the magaziine safety, and i was putting the spring assembly in correct. it's actually not a surplus inglis, it's civillian production, made in belgium in 1989 according to the serial number

Kevin,

I just examined my browning HP, and it is the twin to yours.  Phosphate finish, ambidextrous safety, low rib on slide, right?

The only thing that could cause the failure to set safety "on" and release the hammer when trigger is pulled is: the sear spring is not engaged.

I'll bet your disassembly included unpinning the sear and ejector, eh?  Trying unpinning them again, and this time, let the sear spring engage the tail of the sear before installing the ejector and pin.
