Question for MN shotgun/deer hunters.
« on: April 11, 2007, 02:01:02 PM »
Hello, just found this forum today - guess I never scrolled down far enough before.  Anyways, I have a suggestion for the DNR & I wondered what others  thought of it.  My idea is why not allow the use of pistol-caliber rifles (.45 Colt, .44 Mag, etc.)  for deer hunting in the shotgun-only areas of the state.  Presently, hanguns are permitted in  these areas.  It makes no sense to me that I can hunt with a .270 Winchester handgun, but I can't use my .45 Colt carbine. It would be easy enough to enforce by haveing maximum/minimum cartridge lengths, similar to the present handgun caliber restrictions.  I emailed the DNR with my suggestion back in January, but never got any acknowledgement from them. (Not really surprised)

Anyways, just wondered what others in the state might think of such an idea.

Thanks,
Mike

I can give you a short version (hopefully accurate) of how the 10mm caliber got approved as a legal big game pistol round. Approximately 12 years ago a So St Paul cop by the name of Mike Mckenzie wanted to hunt with a 10mm pistol. It was not classified as a legal big game round at the time. He submitted alot of paperwork showing the ballistics, etcetera to the State of MN and it had to be actually voted upon and signed by the Governor into law to my knowledge.

I did buy a 10mm Delta Gold Cup shortly after for deer and bear. I believe it get about 600 foot pounds of energy with the Hornady 200 grain bullet and max charge of blue dot powder.

So basically from what I understand it's not done by the DNR but has to be voted upon and of course right now they have a ton of other things going on like TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO RAISE OUR TAXES DESPITE THE 2 PLUS BILLION SURPLUS!

I've thought the same thing for years. I guess we need to get ahold of our reps.
99% of all Lawyers give the other 1% a bad name. What I find hilarious about this is they are such an arrogant bunch, that they all think they are in the 1%.

Interesting about the 10mm Bearfat.  I never thought of the legislative route.  I'll have to do a little research & get in touch with my representative.  I'll see if Robin Brown can help me out.

Thanks,
Mike
