This is a freelance Brooke rifle scaled to use the 1.25x10 piece.  Again, click the image for a dimensioned drawing.

My sympathy to the letter carrier.

That's what they invented dollies for.   ;D

When I ship heavy stuff like that in cardboard boxes, I drywall screw the metal to a scrap piece of plywood so it won't crash around in the box and puncture the cardboard.

I stuffed about 56 lbs in the last one I sent (for the last contest) to DD.  It made it.  This one will be packed solid with layers of cardboard - no room for anything to slide.

I started with No. 2.  Here is the barrel with trunnions and reinforcing band.  The band will be shrink fitted after the trunnions are welded and the hemispherical breech is done.

Time for another progress report.  I have rounded off the breech and added a separate breeching jaws since I forgot about them (left them off the drawing, an error that has been corrected on the small drawing and will be corrected on the dimensioned one) while I was originally turning the barrel.  Next I have to do some delicate welding so I don't melt things I don't want to melt.  Progress in pix follows:

GG,

     You can imagine how partial Mike and I are to seacoast and naval guns, but your efforts thus far are OUTSTANDING!!  It's going to be a great looking gun!
What will be your method of securing the reinforcing band assy. to the tube?  If it will be a shrink fit, how much diametral interference will there be with both parts at room temperature?  Thanks.

It was intended to be a shrink fit with an intended .001" to .0015" interference.  However, I find I can partially slide the reinforce on by hand so there must be some non-uniformity of either the reinforce or the as delivered diameter of the barrel material.  I think at this point that I will simply press them together as I don't think the interference will require heat expansion.

I have been thinking about buying a new welder for a while and this project pushed me over the edge.  I bought a Miller Dynasty 200 DX with a higher top end and a much lower bottom end than the one I already had.



It has much more control over the welding current than my old one.  But it handles a little different, too.

Anyway, since this is not a commercial for Miller welding machines, I welded the trunnions and breeching jaws on the Brooke tube, cleaned the welds with a rattail file, and pressed the reinforce on.  I plan to bead blast it to get a sort of cast iron finish.  Then drill the vent.  Then make a center pintle mount for it.

The shot is .50 cal.  The barrel is about 7 3/8" long which works out to 4.6% of a 10" smoothbore, although it is not an exact model.
