32 loads
« on: March 25, 2007, 04:03:59 PM »
Hello,

Was fortunate enough to pick up an 80s vintage CVA 32 cal. for my 8 and 10 yr. olds to start shooting. They love it. We've been shooting 2F black with good results mainly because I have a lot of it on hand. I've read 3F is more suited for small bores. 10 gr of 3F is supposedly a good light load. Is that true? Seems awful light to me. Then what would the equivalent in 2F black be? I've been shooting 20 of 2F. Also...would 3F "777" powder work well (10 - 15 gr)? Thanks for the help.

Well just took out my boys Traditions for the first time today. Started at 10grns of Pyrodex P and worked up to 30grns my boys are 7 and 5 and even with 30grns my youngest was still was grinning from ear to ear and he fired that load about 6 times. Couldnt tell you much about accuracy the wind was rippin and was making it hard for the kids to keep steady but all shots were on paper at 30 yards.

Pyrodex P= 3fg With 30grns it felt just like my .22mag

While Ffg works, as you've seen, Fffg is generally considered to be the better powder for the small bores.  Each rifle being an entity unto itself only shooting it on paper will tell the whole truth.

The 3 32's I've had over the years all liked 20 grs. of Fffg.  Nice load, doesn't foul much and is generally more accurate than most of us can shoot.  You can shoot more powder but if 20 works, why increase the load 50%?

I shoot between 20 and 30 gr FFFG Goex out of my CVA 32 with a Hornady PRB.  A buddy at the range this weekend had his Traditions 32 and he was  shooting Triple 7 FFFG , 20 gr if I remember correctly.

Fun guns to shoot and very accurate out to 40 yds or so.
