Barrel lapping
« on: March 23, 2007, 11:46:46 AM »
Has anybody used the David Tubbs Final Finish barrel laping kit. I have hand lapped the barrels on the last three guns I purchased and they are all good shooters but I would like to try this system on the .223 barrel I just ordered. Thanks.

The general consensus is that it will do more harm than good in the very shallow rifling of the H&Rs. One member reported that it shot worse after using Tubbs. I would recommend you save the money and stick to bore polishing with methods recommended in the FAQs. ;)

What is JB Paste?  I have looked at a couple of big box sporting goods stores in the firearms cleaning supplies and didn't see any.  Do I need to look at a gun specialty shop or order it?  Or is it some common product found in the household cleaning isle at Wally World?

JB makes non-embedding bore compound and Bore Bright, the compound is what is usually referred to as paste, USP makes one called paste also. But any of them will work, I've used the Bore Bright, it's jeweler's rouge in my opinion, same color, purple.

I kind of hate to ask this, but has anybody here used tooth paste?  My grandfather used it, I've used it as long as I can remember.  It works.  Will also remove rust, and is great to smooth up a fishing reel!

As available as Flitz, Simichrome and Maas are, why would anyone want to use toothpaste? ::) One of em will be available in your local supermarket or hardware store and they all work just fine. ;) Of course, it you like the smell of toothpaste on you firearms, have at it!! :D

I have done the hand polishing just as instructed in the FAQs right here on GBs. I used Simichrome and am very pleased with the results.
The break-in period is shorter and uses less ammo to get there.
Now, with each new rifle, I do that before the first shot..

I just did my first new barrel using Flitz, spent about 45mins on it and man does it shine.I could tell a difference in how easy a wet patch will go through after cleaning it out good.Have not got to shoot it yet.
