223 bull handi
« on: March 24, 2007, 04:22:13 PM »
hey pards
i just got back from the range at my cousins house
we have access to 700 yards there
we have a 4ft x 5ft steel plate set at 462 yards downrange
he was using an 800 dollar encore pro hunter in 223 with a 28 ( i believe ) inch barrel
and a 350 dollar burris scope on it
he shot a 2 1/2 inch group that hit abt three inches below his aiming point
i laid my 200 dollar 223 with a 79 dollar scope ( cant remember the name of it now ) that i got at academy sports
and after i asked him where he aimed i copied him and shot a three shot group INSIDE his group!!!
also he was using carefully handloaded ammo saying that it was the load his gun seemed to shoot the best with
i was using remington 55 grain fmc loads from wally world
i couldnt believe it myself i was shocked
now im not knocking the encore but dang it made me feel great seeing that little handi shoot right with a setup costing abt five times as much
all in all a good day at the range

My father-in-law and his Browning 7 Mag always quits shooting whenever I get my Stevens 200 or my Handi out.  It insults him I think.  Quality rifles are great, but it mystifies me how much people can rationalize how they spent $800 on a "Medallion A-Bolt whatever".  His rifle shot ONE "dime sized" group 10 YEARS AGO and that makes it a tackdriver.  I love the man, but he doesn't have a "rifle that shoots 1/4" groups".  He has a "rifle that shot one 1/4 group".

sorry, got a little sidetracked there.

Great shooting.  Gotta love the 223 Handi.

RO,
How did your .500 do on the deer? I'm curious of how the bullet looked when recovered, or did it pass through? Was it a handload or factory offering? I'm interested in the round, but can't seem to buy anything other than .35 Whelens and .45-70s.
