Load strength of the 45-70
« on: March 23, 2007, 03:28:04 PM »
I'm about to buy a synthetic stock handi-rifle in 45-70 to take to Ms. next fall.
I find all kinds of load data classified in  3 different action strengths but the handi is not mentioned in any catagory !  So where does the rifle fall in those catagories listed by Ken Walters in Pet Loads ?
What can I load in it ? I'm planning to use a 300 grn bullet for deer. Any load suggestions would help, something that won't kick the devil out of me and still kill a deer at 150-75 yds.
Is the handi rifle the only entry level 45-70. The one I'm going to order is 211.00 is this a bad price ?

I have heard it claimed on this forum that Handi's are good for lever gun loads, but if all you want is a good 350 gr. deer load for 100 yards, the top end of the  trapdoor loads should be good enough. The recoil should be relatively mild. Others I am sure will pitch in with somewaht different views but this my $0.02 worth ;D

Buy yourself a box or two of those Hornady LeveRolution rounds, unless you handload. They are accurate, and don't kick that bad. And, oh yeah, they'll knock the gizzards out of deer. ;)
I shot a good sized doe sneaking along in the rain, and it produced a halo of water spray when it hit. Pretty cool!

I'm new here but I'll tell you what I've found out. The Handi is damn fine rifle for the $. In regards to the load level. Since you are looking at a synthetic stock model, I would stay at the light side of the load scale. These guns are light even with the wood stock (which is what I have) I know these guns will handle the lower end Ruger loads, but I don't think I would push it any harder that that. I just resized some brass tonight after a load test, and the case head expansion was at what I would call a max load. The load consisted of 56 gr of H335 with a CCI 200 primer behind a Rem. 405 gr JSP. I did not test velocity, but this load snorted pretty darn good. These guns are an absolute blast to shoot (no pun intended) The price you listed there is better than what I payed, Guns here in MI tend to be on the high side though.

I hope this helps you out.
Nick

H&R will tell you that levergun loads are fine, but most find even those too stout, specially without any recoil  modifications. I shoot wood stocked .45-70s only, either lam, or walnut, they all have a Limbsaver recoil pad and I use either a 2lb lead pipe or lately, a 1lb mercury recoil reducer in the stock bolt hole for bench work, the recoil of the 300gr Nosler partition at over 2400fps is just about equal to the recoil of the 375 H&H.

Hello

Tim could you point me in the direction of the mercury recoil reducers. As of today I found out this old guy needs one.

Thanks

Joe

That's the one! ;)

You can buy a ¼"x4" fine threaded cap screw at your local hardware store to remove the MRR, cheaper than buying their tool. I wrapped a couple layers of tape around the MRR so it fits snug in the bolt hole, then use a piece of PVC pipe that just fits in the stock hole as a spacer to fill the gap tween the MRR and the recoil pad. Glue a patch of leather to the front end of the MRR to protect it and the stock bolt and keep it from rattling.

Hello

Tim I just found out about the Handi Rifle. I told two shooters at the job about the Bufflo Classic and the one had a chance to see one hold one etc. When he seen me he was all smiles the first thing he sad I can have it bored to 45-110. He and his brother have falling block replicas that they shoot with BP loadings.

I only shoot smokeless, black powder is hard to get around here, BP substitutes cost just as much as smokeless and you need to use twice as much of it, so smokeless makes more sense(cents ;D) for me. Lot's easier to clean up after too!! :D

When my father saw my BC he giggled and said "Hell boy, thats quite a sewer pipe ya got there". He is a peep sight shooter from way back. I asked him if he would like to shoot it and he said no thanks, he had other plans for this summer.  ;D
I bought him a .22 magnum garden gun a couple of years ago and he is content keeping the starlings out of his purple martin houses.

quickdtoo, do you have any information or posts on your 45-120?

Was there any concern that the 3 1/4 inch case puts the bullet into the barrel contour transition?

thanks in advance,

edge.
