Barnes X bullet?
« on: March 23, 2007, 03:35:14 AM »
Hello,

I'm thinking of loading Barnes 100 gr TSX's (triple shock) or XLC's (coated) in my 257 Roberts to increase terminal performance on deer a bit. Its in a short action and I can't go any bigger than the 100s. Are they as good as the Barne's claims? Also...Is the claim of copper fouling virtually eliminated true from your field experience? Thanks for the input and God Bless?

I've only shot one deer with a Barnes bullet, and that was a 120gr in a 260 remington. It did the job. I know there is some concern that the Barnes bullets don't open up enough for lighter game, and the exit hole on this deer was pretty much the same as the entrance hole. But there was plenty of damage inside. I did hit shoulder bone going in.

First of all, Barnes XLC bullets though quite good are, by and large being or have been discontinued.  Don't waste your money on them as you won't be able to get more.

I think Barnes TSXs are as good as Barnes claims.  If you start with a clean barrel (and I mean really clean) of reasonable quality (not pitted) Barnes TSXs don't foul any worse than other bullets.  In addition, if a rabbit is any guide as to performance on light game, I would say they definitely expand fast and a lot.  Despite their rapid expansion, they are also proverbial for blasting through large animals most of the time.

Have taken 6 deer so far with the TSX in a 243-3deer, 270-2 deer, and 1 with a 50 cal Omega which I used a .451 Barnes Spit-Fire (or some such name)
All were one shot Bang-Flop kills.
All were pass thru's except the MZ which I hit the buck at the base of the skull  just below his ear and it turned his head into pudding- did get the rack but nothing to mount on this 8 pointer- in defense of my shooting, he was moving and I guess I led a hair too much for his chest to catch up with the round.
Anyway, they worked great for me.
Little problem with copper fouling-cannot say I see anymore with Barnes than I do with conventional ammo but as previously noted, start with a CLEAN barrel.

Just my observations.
