Why do some M44s have brass hand guard ends, and some have steel ones?  Robert

There are all models of Mosins to be found with the brass handguard ends.No one knows why.The brass ones are more desireable.

During war, some metals are a whole lot harder to come by than others.
They substituted what they had.
