Dies for 7.62X54R?
« on: January 02, 2009, 03:05:25 PM »
What do you guys use?

I like Lee dies but their set comes with a .308" expander plug only.

Rcbs dies come with both a .308 and a .310 expander plug.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

I got the Lee Loader (the beat it with a hammer kind) because it was cheap and I figured to just necksize only anyway.  Barnaul ammo is so cheap for plinking that I figured it was the way to go for me.  I am slowly saving my Winchester and S&B brass to work up a load with some Hornadys though.

I have the RCBS die set since my M44 likes the .311 and .312 bullets the best I only use the .310 expander.

I have the Lee set and just bought an expander for a British 303, it works perfect.  Larry

I use my .300 WSM dies & neck size only. Seems to work okay with .308 & larger bullets.  Don't shoot it much though.

I used the Lee dies for a long time, with whatever expander plug they have. I loaded .312 bullets. Absolutely no problem, and excellent results.

I use RCBS 7.62x54R dies and yes they come with both .308 and .310 expander balls.  For brass I’ve been having great luck with fired cases from Winchester White Box 180gr SPs.  I recently bought a Finnish M39 and decided to load up some 7.62x53R with .308 Hornady 150gr bullets to see how they’ll shoot compared to the same style Hornady .311 bullets.  Using the .308 expander the neck tension seams adequate to hold the smaller bullets correctly.  I have yet to shoot the M39 so I’ll post an update after I get to the range.  So far IMR4350 and Hodgdon (sp) VARGET have worked out very well and I have had not issues using Standard Winchester Large Rifle Primers (pierced or light firing pin strikes) with any of my Mosin Nagants as long as the firing pin is adjusted correctly. I’m having great fun studying the history and experimenting with loads for my M44, 91/59, and now M39.  Unfortunate, space is getting tight in the gun safe and I’ll probably sell my Laminated M44 at the next gun show.

I picked up a set of RCBS the other day.
It was all they had and I didn't want to make another trip to town.
Just as happy as always with them, other than the cost.
