CZ 550FS in a 9.3x62
« on: April 08, 2007, 05:04:13 AM »
Just a little information on a 9.3x62.  First off when I got the firearm a year ago I went to the range with open sites and found out at 50 yards it was awesome accurate.  I expected for some reason this 286 grain bullet would be like shooting aless than accurate 100 year old gun. WRONG!  It also kicked but not anymore than a 300
Win. Mag.  actually less and more of a big push.  Since I had no experience with large bullets I also thought it would drop a lot after 100 yards.  Wrong!  MY reloads a Nosler copy with 286 gr. Partitions sighted 2.1" high at
100yds. are dead nuts on at 200yds and 9.5 " low at 300yds.  Actually quite close to a 30-06 , 180gr. with a standard factory load!

But the biggest surprise was to come on a black bear hunt in Manitoba.  I hit a 400lb. ( actual weight) in the chest missed the heart but did all it needed to do.  It dropped him in his tracks at 35 yards!  No head, neck, or spine hit.  These pumpkin bullets really lay the smack down!!!  I don't know anything about other CZ rifles but this one will be on my Moose hunt in Ontario this fall and I can see no reason to ever sell it.  Beautiful gun for a reasonable amount of money with a Mannlicher stock and is balanced for easy aiming.  I knew nothing about this caliber but I am amazed at it's accuracy and killing power!   Buckfever

You have picked probably one of the finest big game rounds out there. I have been using one for some time, mine being FN and Husqvarna Mauser's. You will have no problem with moose, of course. I used mine in Africa 5 years ago taking all manner of game using the 250 gr Barnes X. Here's a shot of my eland taken running at 35 yards in the brush. The bullet hit a bit high on the shoulder but rolled him dead nonetheless. The recovered bullet follows, the one on the far right, found under the hide on the offside shoulder. It lost two petals and weighs 221 grs. Good luck on you moose.

I am in the process of buying this identical rifle.

I have a line on a set of QD rings from Warne that are presently on a 600/601 series rifle in 30-06.  Will these rings also fit the CZ550 series rifles??

Thanks in advance.

I don't know.  But I do know that Warne has a set for the CZ in standard and QD.  On the package it says
Brno/CZ 19mm, scope size 36mm-42mm.  So while I don't know for sure I believe so.   Buckfever

I am thinking of joining the same club!  Looking for a 300yds. non-mag elk rifle...think it will fit rather well.

I believe that those rings will work but I'd give Warne a call at 1-800-683-5590 to confirm. Those CZ's are about the finest factory rifle built these days. All that I have known have had fine barrels and been superbly accurate. I just wish they would sell them without the set trigger or have that as an option.

Why wouldn't you just use the trigger as it is intended, it would be the same as any other conventional trigger.  You wouldn't have to use the forward set.

I prefer a crisp 2 1/2# trigger and I have not been able to get there, unset, by adjusting my CZ's settable trigger. Also, there are a whole lot of parts in that trigger that I prefer not to have to worry about on a big game hunting rifle and I will never use the set position while hunting so why have it. A properly worked Win M70 or Ruger Mark II trigger is the cats meow for me, simple, reliable and very tune-able. Just my preferences.
