Accuracy and barrel changing
« on: January 06, 2005, 03:32:39 PM »
Does the Accuracy change or the point of impact (zero) change when you switch barrels frequently.  I'm purchasing another barrel and this concerns me a great deal as the shot are usually long and a small change could have a big effect on zero.

The sights or scope are attached only to the barrel , I remove barrels all the time without problem .

Accuracy and barrel changing

This subject seems to come up quite often on the forums!

But like 22popnsplat implied accuracy should not change when the barrel is reinstalled on the same frame!
However, when the barrel is installed on a different frame, accuracy could be off, according to what we hear on the forums!

Myself, I just haven't absorbed why it's different when installed on another frame, when the cartridge is enclosed inside the chamber of the barrel and the scope is attached to the barrel!  It seems to me that the frame only provides a means of igniting the primer!

I know that the hinge pin can be angled a little left or right, loose or tight, but the chamber, barrel and scope are the constant factor in the picture, they remain lined up with each other!

Hope I didn't confuse you too much, but I am still unsure as to why it makes a difference when you switch barrels!

While accuracy never changed from changing barrels. POI ALWAYS changed on my setup.

Going to a different frame can change accuracy as you are changing harmonics.

For more info, there is a topic still on the first page of this forum explaining all that we have gone to trying to prevent change in POI.....torque wrenches, free floating forends, fiberglass stocks, pillare bedded stocks and forend, you name it I tried it.  Sold my Encore package and am having a complete custom bolt gun made.

My encore was great as long as I left one barrel on it per season.

You cannot really say that we all have gone though this problem.  With more than a couple of frames and more than a dozen barrels, I do not seem to have all these problems.

Never had a problem with a several different Contender frames and several barrels. In fact while out shooting pds I rely on the fact I can change them to keep stuff cool and try different calibers.
Almost wish I had a problem so I could make a mission out of finding out what all the trouble is about.

My guess is that changes due to harmonics are more pronounced in rifle barrels because of the extended length, and more pronounced in the more powerful calibers.  And that is all it is: a guess.  I haven't had a problem, but have no cannons, and mainly pistols.  In my experience, limited that it is, I can change between frames and have everything stay the same.  My opinion may change as I learn this Contender rifle business.

Bullseye and Skb,

Did not mean to imply we have ALL had problems, that is why I refered to "my setup."

My calibers ranged from 223Custom, 22-250Factory, 22-250ImpCustom, 25-06Factory,280Custom, 280ImpCustom, 280AI Custom, 375JDJCustom, and 50cal MZLR Factory.  All barrels were 26" but the 223 was 22".  Maybe my barrel were too long?

All on one SS frame....Lone Wolf Fiberglass stock Aluminum bedded/pillar bedded, and Lone Wolf fiberglass forend pillar beddedand floated with factory hinge pin and later oversized pin.  ALL rifle barrels would change POI, usually within 1-2" of last zero.  Not a big deal to some but that is HUGE to me.  The pistol barels are not as bad and my Contender...only pistol barrels...is great about holding zero with 2 barrels.  I still choose not to change barrels during the season as I have seen and know that POI MIGHT change.

I dealt with it in my Encore by leaving one barrel on...280Imp 90% of the time ALWAYS checking zero after switching.  But this grew old and with the extremely expensive GS Cutom bullet...over $1 per projectile(just the bullet alone over $1) ....checking zero HURT!!!

If you do not have POI changes with barrel changes, GREAT...ENJOY.  Let us all know exactly what you do.  Those who still have Encore will benefit.

All of my carbine setups are hanger bar foreends on 21"-22" VVCG or Bullberry barrels. All of my barrels lockup tight and there is no percievable gap between the breech face and the back of the chamber. Again all of them have little or no excessive looseness in the hinge pin and holes. For load development and confirmation I shoot them off front bags up close to the trigger guard, rear sand bags and I index every cartridge.
I did just purchase a factory barrel in .204 Ruger that I am curious if it exhibits problems with shift of POI when changing back and forth. It is the first factory barrel (Fox Ridge) I have owned in years.
