Picked up Some Persistant Stuff
« on: April 02, 2007, 05:31:54 AM »
My son was using this computor and picked some persistant and wierd stuff that won't go away,,,won't even allow me to open my homepage which is msn.com. Ad-aware won't remove them, EZ virus detection has found them.
Pages that takeover control of my computor are labeled:
SpywareLocked
Malwarewiped
asafetyproject
These are adverts for spyware, virus cleaning, protection etc.
I've gone to the add/remove utility to remove them but they do not show up there.
I've searched for them in directory but they don't show up......

How do I clean this garbage out ...?

....thanx.....TM7

First, turn off system restore, if you don't the OS may restore the files you delete at the next restart.

UPDATE: Ewido is no longer available, Trend Housecall can be downloaded to run a scan to remove unwanted threats.

Download and install AdAware Free, an excellent free programs for removing unwanted malware....

Same for Spybot S&D 1.6, it has controls that allow you to lock your browser so the homepage can't be changed without your input.

For future protection be sure to use a good antivirus, there are several free programs available, AVG, Avast are a couple good ones, download and install, then be sure to update them regularly, all internet security programs must be updated regularly or they won't be able to detect new threats. I've been using Avira Antivir Premuim, an excellent program which has protected me very well for several years.

I also use a firewall besides the windows firewall, Zone Alarm is a free program that works well for all three of our PCs.
