DIY laminate stock

I just want to share pictures of a laminated stock I just finished. The wood in the center of the stock is maple and the sides are butternut. I salvaged (more like rescued) the wood from a firewood pile at a friend's camp.

Love it! Nice job for something that was headed to a camp fire.
You just gave me an idea for some slab black cherry and walnut that I know where I can get my hands on. :)
I have never tried laminating so how did you get the seams so perfect? Did you use a planer or do it by hand? Did you use glue or epoxy?

I planed the wood first to get a flat, smooth surface then I glued the pieces with a two part boat builder's epoxy. The epoxy is crystal clear so I also brushed a coat on the stock after I had the wood all sanded. Once the epoxy penatrates the pores it hardens very hard and makes the wood more resistant to dings and scratches. The next day I sanded the epoxy and applied several coats of TRU-OIL.

For twenty plus years we had an outside wood furnace. (I thank God we're on Geothermal now) I can't begin to tell you the interesting and beautiful pieces of maple and other hardwoods we burned.  I have neither the wood working shop or the talent, so they went in the fire.  Were I younger, I'd set up a shop and get going on it.  That is truly beautiful work.

watsisname, Wow, very nice job on that rifle. Thanks for the pictures and specifics. I got to say sure does look better that any pallet wood stock I ever saw. Take care, John.

just one question:  Why do you put sling swivels on the underside?   
 
I have yet to find a rifle that would not carry better with the sling on the off side.   (the Germans figured that out)  when I'm bushwack'n or humping stuff whilst carrying a rifle, I like it slung across my back.
