Reloading Help

My wife gave me a 45/70 Handi at christmas of 05.  Fell in love with the rifle after my first hunt.  Couldn't hunt this past year because of surgery recovery, but really started getting my interest up in the handi rifles.  In the past month I have bought a .280 barrel, a .223 ultra varmint,  and another frame with stock and forearm.  When I went to the gun dealer to get a copy of his ffl to send for my merchandise, I ended up putting a buffalo classic on layaway. (I really think I have it bad)  A friend of mine has given me all of his reloading equipment (RCBS).  I am now looking for printed material or DVD on how to reload.  Can someone suggest a good starting point on learning this.  I presently have dies for 45/70/ .280 and 44 mag (guess what my next barrel will be).

Way to go, congrats!! The Lyman 48th is about as good as it gets for one manual, but you can never have too many manuals......or Handis, for that matter!! If you want lots of load data, cheap, pick up or order a Loadbook for the .45-70, it has all published bullet and powder Mfr data in one book, they make em in all of those calibers and a lot more, Sportsmans Warehouse carries them, and they're available at Midway or direct from the publisher.

No, I think you'd want to get the Lyman Black Powder manual for that. Here's a good read on a BP Handi...

you can also usually find pretty good loads on the power mfg's websites. I trust it more than a random google search.

The Lyman 48th edition is an excillent starting point, It also explains bullet casting. Get as many loading manuals from as many different component manufactures as you can. I have 6 manuals within arms reach right now and a few more lieing around the house.

Loading can be as relaxing and rewarding as shooting if you take the time to do it right. One little slip can destroy a nice firearm and hurt the shooter and those around the shooter. It's well worth the time and money invested. Just take your time and be careful. Most of all, HAVE FUN!

Im brand new to reloading. Just fired my reloads for the first time yesterday (4570) get the lyman 48th & modern reloading by Lee.

One more tip. The max loads they list are exactly that. Don't try to push past them. They are not wimped out for insurance reasons. When it says max charge that's just what it means.

Loading manuals have a lot more valuable info in them than just load data, specially for a new reloader, to dis a manual for the few bucks one costs is irresponsible and to recommend not buying one won't be condoned here.

I'm not knocking load books. I have a couple myself and I'm glad I do, but if he already knew what he was doing and just wanted load data (and that was the impression I got) I just was trying to be helpful. But if he wants all the information in the book by all means get it, it's a pretty good book, though I wish modern reloading had more directions for use instead of lee just telling how clever his porducts are. I'll even toss in my own plug for safety: don't blow yourself up trying to save 50 cents in componets. never reseat a primer in a loaded case. when in doubt, throw it out. ask lots of questions. make sure you read all instructions.

sewell369, I recommend that you go down to the Handloading forum and read the sticky for new reloaders, excellent advice has been posted there just for folks that want to learn.

I have read this thread a couple of times and am rather surprised at the rapid change in direction it took. After reading and rereading it I believe greylings offer to help was one of pure and unbiased generosity and willingness to help another member. Hopefully this argument and the hard feelings can be put away, and fast!!! Remember those famous words of Rodney King, "Can't we just all get along?"....<><....
